Grand Marshal of St. Patrick's Day Parade
Council Member Bill Kling had the honor of serving as Grand Marshal of the 49th annual Ellen McAnelly St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 14, leading bands, marching groups, local businesses, vintage vehicles and more through downtown Huntsville. Thousands of people lined the streets for what’s become one of Huntsville’s most popular events.

Governors Drive Corridor Study
The City has contracted with Alta Planning + Design for the Governors Drive Corridor Study & Medical District Safety Action Plan with the objective of improving safety and accessibility to Huntsville Hospital and surrounding offices. The study area is an 8.85-mile stretch along Governors Drive from 14th Street on the west end to Caldwell Lane in the Big Cove area with an emphasis on a one-square-mile area in the Medical District.

Celebrating Huntsville's Prospering Music Scene  
Council Member Kling was among those in attendance at the the Huntsville Music Office's at the first Quarterly Meetup of 2026 at the newly reopened Tip Top Cafe. The free community event brought together artists, venue operators, creative professionals, industry stakeholders and music fans for interaction and an update on 2026 initiatives from Music Officer Matt Mandrella.
“2025 was a record-breaking year for the Huntsville Music Office,” Mandrella said. “In 2026, we’re focused on refining and expanding the programs and events that have helped strengthen Huntsville’s music ecosystem including initiatives like our Music Ambassador Program and the 805 After Five concert series.”

Big Spring Park Expansion Underway
Work has started on the Big Spring Park expansion at the former City Hall site and General Services Director Ricky Wilkinson provides an early update in this video. The project will add about 2.4 acres to Big Spring Park on the east side of Church Street and include amenities such as accessible walking paths throughout the site, an event pavilion and public restrooms.

Holmes Avenue Project Moving Forward
The City recently entered into a contract with Volkert Inc. for an engineering design and construction administration services contract for multimodal improvements along 3.25 miles of Holmes Avenue from Spragins Avenue downtown to Sparkman Drive on the campus of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The project will include sidewalks, multiuse paths, cycle lanes, transit shelters, landscaping, decorative lighting and street furniture. Altogether, the improvements will make the corridor safer for all modes of transportation while attracting more residents to use Holmes Avenue.

Mayor's Youth Advisory Council Opens Applications
Applications are now open for high school students to be a part of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council’s 2026-27 cohort. The Council is a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program that empowers high school students to learn about local government and serve their community. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 21.

John Hunt Park Recreation Center Opening Soon
The new recreation center in John Hunt Park will be opening soon as construction crews are in their final weeks of work. Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett provides a behind-the-scenes look at the facility, which will include four basketball courts, eight volleyball courts and 25 outdoor pickleball courts. The recreation center is expected to open in late Spring.
