Dean's Corner
Dear CONHI Community,
As springtime arrives and our students come back from a much-needed break, I am excited to see the progress our College has made this semester. We celebrated the topping out of our new Smart Hospital building expected to open at the end of the year, launched our new Center for Rural Health and Nursing, expanded walk-in advising hours to our students, and much more.
For the first time in over two years, this month we are also holding our annual Dream Makers reception. This event brings together and honors our scholarship donors and recipients. You can learn more about the event happening March 23 on our Dream Makers website.
I could not be more pleased with the success of our students, faculty, and alumni as we are well into 2022. I look forward to connecting with you more as the year progresses.
All the best, Dean Elizabeth Merwin, PhD, RN, FAAN

UTA OPENS CENTER FOR RURAL HEALTH AND NURSING
CONHI has launched a new center to enhance access to health care for Texas’ rural communities.
The Center for Rural Health and Nursing is funded by a $4 million legislative appropriation by the state of Texas. The funding will support the center’s efforts to improve rural nursing education and the health outcomes of rural populations.
“I am very thankful of the Legislature for its support of the University’s efforts to educate and train the next generation of rural health care providers,” said Teik C. Lim, UTA interim president. “Through this new center, we can significantly expand the reach of one of the nation’s top nursing programs to improve the health of rural Texans.”

DANIEL HONORED AS A DFWGREAT 100 NURSE
A lifelong nurse to the core, Kathryn Daniel, has been involved in the care of older adults for more than 35 years, and this year she is one of the newest honorees selected as a 2022 Dallas-Fort Worth Great 100 Nurse.
“Nursing as a career has been and still is, a wonderful career for anyone to consider. There are so many opportunities for nurses to be a part of really making a significant difference in the lives of people in our communities, both at the individual and community level,” said Dr. Daniel. “The initial preparation to become a registered nurse opens doors to such a wide array of prospects. I’ve really been blessed to be able to take advantage of those open doors when they appeared in my path across my career. I can’t imagine doing anything else!”
