I'd like to dedicate this issue to two new members of the Asian Studies Program Faculty: Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Programs, Sinhaeng Lee, and Assistant Professor of Political Science, Frances Wang. Keep an eye out for the exciting new Asian Studies courses Sinhaeng and Frances are now offering at Colgate.

Book Launchin Asia House
The Program in Asian Studies and Asia House welcomes you to attend the launch of Professor Dai Yamamoto's co-edited volume Everyday Life Environmentalism: Community Sustainability and Resilience in Asia, with discussants Aleksandr Sklyar (UNST) and Emily Mitchell-Eaton (GEOG). Attendees will also be able to learn more about the Asian Studies Program and its Fall 2024 course lineup.

Wendy Hui Kyong Chun is Simon Fraser University's Canada 150 Research Chair in New Media in the School of Communication. She has studied both Systems Design Engineering and English Literature, which she combines and mutates in her current work on digital media. KCA Ramen SocialOn February 2nd the Korean Cultural Association (KCA) laid out a variety of popular Korean ramyeon brands--including Shin, Jin, and Buldak--in the ALANA Cultural Center for attendees to prepare and enjoy in a festive, lively atmosphere. KCA’s goal is to create an open and friendly space in which Korean or Korean-American students can feel a sense of home, and where non-Korean students can engage in exciting cultural experiences.

Lunar New Year at ALANAOn February 10th at the Alana Cultural Center the Colgate Vietnamese Society, Korean Colgate Association, OASIS+, and the Colgate International Community hosted a celebration of Lunar New Year with an array of Chinese and Indonesian delicacies further sweetened by red envelopes filled with goodies. The event spoke to the power of cultural traditions to bring people together.

EALL-Chinese Lantern Festival Party
The Chinese Program of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures hosted a Lantern Festival Party in the Ho Lecture Room on the evening of February 26. Led by Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant Jack Hsueh, students and faculty made traditional yuanxiao rice dumplings, which students, faculty, and friends enjoyed after a dinner catered by China Cafe. The festivities climaxed with Jack's presentation on the history and customs of the Lantern Festival, which included a lively riddle contest.

Tea Ceremony at the AHUM ColloquiumProfessor Yukari Hirata (EALL, LING) explained and demonstrated the Japanese Tea Ceremony to a packed classroom of curious students and faculty for the February 13th Art & Humanities Colloquium, “How Does the Japanese Tea Ceremony fit into Liberal Arts Education?” The Colloquium was held in Colgate’s Japan Center, which has recently been equipped with new tatami mats designed by master craftsmen and installed this year for teaching tea ceremony at Colgate.

International Mother Language DayOn February 21st students gathered in ALANA to mark UNESCO's International Mother Language Day. The day’s roots trace back to protests in Bangladesh in which students laid down their lives for the right to speak their mother tongue. Sponsored by the South Asian Cultural Club, the event included moving performances by Colgate students and language interns of poetry and song in languages ranging from Arabic and Telugu to Spanish and Burmese.

Freeman - ASIA Scholarship Opportunity
The Freeman-ASIA Scholarship provides financial support for U.S. undergraduate students with financial need to study abroad in designated East or Southeast Asian countries. Funding can be used to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.
