A warm welcome to these new members of AFSA! |
Emily Richardson Gerrell began her role as the Academic and Faculty Affairs Coordinator on November first, 2024. Born and raised in Memphis, she has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Memphis, and is currently working towards completing a Master of Science in General Psychology, also from the University of Memphis. Emily primarily supports Dr. Valarie Fleming and the Office of Faculty Affairs. Before coming to the UT Health Science Center, Emily worked in the University of Memphis Office for Institutional Equity for three years, and in the Cristian Brothers University's Graduate School and International Initiatives Office for two years. She enjoys the innate curiosity that comes with working in higher education, and the environment of continuous learning. In her personal life Emily is passionate about Books, plants, and her family.
"I absolutely adore my family, and I'm particularly close with my two siblings. We end up getting together a lot over food, and we love to try new restaurants, recipes, and weird new products from the grocery store."
Jamel Lee began his role as an Educational Specialist for Community Engagement on October 29, 2024. He was born in New Orleans, LA, grew up in New Albany, MS, and currently reside in Horn Lake, MS. Jamel holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Rust College. He is currently working on obtaining a Master of Science in Workforce Education Leadership from Alcorn State University, and expects to graduate in May 2025. As the new Educational Specialist in the Office of Leadership and Service, Jamel's focus is on creating impactful co-curricular and service-learning opportunities for UT Health Science Center students. His position collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement both online and in-person programs that enhance students' academic experiences and growth, both inside and outside the classroom. He is also responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Campus Cupboard. Jamel began his professional journey as an Outreach Specialist for the Child Support Office here in Memphis, where he developed and taught soft skills classes for parents and organized events focused on health, employment, and education. He had the opportunity to work part-time on a temporary project here at the UT Health Science Center, and in that time was inspired by the University’s mission, along with the unique experiences it offers.
"I bring a background in developing educational programming, leading community initiatives, and networking with community partners. These skills enable me to connect students with meaningful experiences that promote both their personal growth, and our institution's mission of community engagement."
Please extend a warm welcome to Emily Richardson Gerrell and Jamel Lee!
