Alumnus Named Science Teacher of the Year

Jeff Bouwman, '03, a science teacher at Shumate Middle School in Gibraltar, Michigan, has been named the 2019 Middle School Science Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Science Teachers Association.
Bouwman was recognized for the unique opportunities and programs he has established for his students.

Alumni in 10 Interview: Nikki Dunham '05

Nikki Dunham, '05, earned her B.S. in psychology while at Grand Valley before going on to graduate school to earn a master's in college student development. She has since worked in a variety of positions within Student Affairs and is currently an Assistant Director. GVSU Appoints Fifth President

The Grand Valley State University Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Philomena V. Mantella as the university’s fifth president, effective July 1, 2019. The trustees voted unanimously to appoint her to the presidency at a special board meeting held on the Allendale Campus in January.

MLK Speaker Challenges Audience Perspective of King

On January 21, the Grand Valley community honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a silent march and keynote address by David Stovall, professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago. He asked the crowd to consider King a "revolutionary warrior for justice, peace, and love." He also asked audience members to break their silence on social justice issues.

Grand Valley's Annis Water Resources Institute Enters Partnership with MSU to Address Water Challenges

Grand Valley's Annis Water Resources Institute has formalized a partnership with Michigan State University's Institute of Water Research to work together on water-related issues. Leaders from the two institutions have met to discuss potential collaborations, and a memorandum of understanding has been signed.

Art Gallery Exhibition: Reflect – Revive – Reshape

Visit the GVSU Art Gallery and explore the artwork in the free exhibition "Reflect – Revive – Reshape" featuring the work of Grand Valley faculty members. The art displayed ranges from photogravure prints that combine historic and digital traditions to hand-built ceramic animals marked with decals and conceptual accessories. The exhibition is open until March 29 with gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

GVSU Sawyers Day

Join in on the Sawyers Day experience for the men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Michigan Tech on Saturday, February 23. The experience includes a ticket to both "Faux Back" games, access to the outdoor, heated beer garden – including three drink tickets – pregame, a special edition Adidas Sawyers hat, and a discount coupon for more Sawyers gear at the GVSU Team Shop.

Mikayla Karasek Named GLIAC Diver of the Week

Grand Valley junior Mikayla Karasek was named the GLIAC Diver of the Week on February 1. Karasek, a four-time NCAA DII All-American and defending GLIAC Champion on the 1-meter board, captured a pair of first-place finishes and hit the 2019 auto qualifying mark for the NCAA DII Championships at the 2019 Grand Valley State Invitational.

Club Sport Highlight: Nine Laker Wrestlers Finish in Top Three at Laker Classic

After a week battling a polar vortex which resulted in no classes for five consecutive days and limited practice opportunities, the Laker wrestlers came out hot in the 2019 Laker Classic. Wrestling on their home mats for the only time in the 18-19 season, GVSU turned the focus to individual format tournaments after their third place finish at the 2019 NCWA National Duals.
