Industrial hemp is a newly emerging agricultural market in Tennessee, and Julian Cosner, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, is developing pest management strategies that could increase the economic viability of the crop, especially for growers in the state.

Andrew Lantz, a 4-H youth development agent with University of Tennessee–Tennessee State University Extension Davidson County, uses wild birds to teach youth STEM concepts. The lesson plans he developed won him a first-place award from the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals.
Scientific Journals
The Office of Research and Engagement will host a SPARKS workshop on international research, featuring Rebecca Keiser, head of NSF's Office of International Science and Engineering. Other presenters will also share their tips and experiences on launching and maintaining internationally engaged research.

Mariya Zhuravleva, assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is working to secure the country against the threat of smuggled radioactive cargo. With funding by the Department of Homeland Security, she is developing better, cost-effective detectors for illicit radioactive materials.
ISSE Selects 2021 Seed Grant Projects
The Office of Research and Engagement is accepting nominations for three research-related awards to be given during the Chancellor’s Honors Banquet. Nominations for faculty research awards are due by noon on Friday, January 22, 2021.
