From the CEO
It is wonderful to see how vital downtown Fort Wayne has become. New retail, restaurants, murals, ice skating and other destination venues are drawing more and more into the downtown streets. Gone are the days when a drive through downtown was one of isolation. Winter is here and the challenge is to continue to draw the same crowds. We want everyone to feel as if downtown offers them a draw…but is that true?

We want everyone to enjoy the activities that their town has to offer…including the activities in the winter. Through inclusive social, recreational and arts programs, AWS Foundation and the organizations they fund seek to engage and inspire individuals with enduring disabilities all over Northeast Indiana. Through our grants we strive to provide the opportunities for volunteerism, access to the theater, music, recreation and all the great things that make our community our home. We recognize the isolation and loneliness that is too often a routine part of the life for the person with a disability.

Grantee Spotlight: Greater Fort Wayne
Last year, Greater Fort Wayne approached us with an idea to encourage local businesses to tap into a talent pool that is often overlooked. With our grant, they hired Kevin Morse as their Disability Employment Services Coordinator. This initiative benefits both individuals with disabilities that can and want to be employed, and employers that struggle to fill positions.

Kevin describes his role as matchmaker: “Once I know what a company is looking for in an employee, I can match them up with someone who has that skill set.” His employee talent pool is comprised of candidates who come from agencies like Benchmark, Turnstone and Easterseals Arc, who’ve typically had some skill-building under their belt. Often candidates with disabilities are fully qualified, but the hiring process can be cumbersome. Kevin teaches employers to think and interview more creatively to get to know these candidates. Once they are settled in, their job performance is rarely an issue.

Sometimes employers struggle to find qualified candidates when an immediate need arises. Kevin’s goal is to create a database of employees with details about their strengths and skills, as well as a list of companies seeking to fulfill jobs and their criteria. Think of Kevin as a matchmaker of employment. We look forward to seeing more of Kevin’s work in action and how it propels Greater Fort Wayne’s mission to grow our economy while enhancing the lives of those with disabilities.

If you think you can benefit from Kevin’s services, you may contact him at 260-203-5754 or kmorse@greaterfortwayneinc.com.
New Face at AWSF
We would like to welcome Joni Schmalzried, our new Chief Program Officer. Coming in during our grant review period of the quarter, she is getting engulfed in our process right away (but we’re taking it easy on her this time)! She is a graduate of Saint Francis College with Masters and Doctoral degrees from Ball State University. Joni has plenty of experience in the disability world, with 34 years in Special Education and coming to us from 8 years as a professor and Project Coordinator/Research Associate at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University. That experience means she’s no stranger to grant applications, and is eager to work on the other side. Our staff is excited to be working with Joni and know that those we work with will feel the same.
