- On Saturday, May 17, the Department of Mathematical Sciences hosted the 9th annual Stevens Mathematical Olympiad, welcoming over 500 students in grades 3–12. Led by Pavel Dubovski, the event included more than 450 students from grades 3–8 and over 100 from grades 9–12. Top scorers will return in June for the Awards Ceremony.

Lei Wu (PI), ECE Professor and Anson Wood Burchard Chair Professor, received a DOE award of $267K for his project “Addressing Market Design and Operational Gaps for Multiregional Participation with Interregional Operational Coordination (MROC),” with NREL as prime.

Nicholaus Parziale (PI), ME George Meade Bond Endowed Professor, received an Army Research Office award of $250K for his project “Phase II SBIR: Experimental Characterization of Supersonic and Hypersonic Mixed-Compression Inlet Flow Dynamics,” with HySonic Inc. as prime.

Hao Wang (PI), ECE Assistant Professor, received an NSF Award of $100K for his project “SaTC: CORE: Small: Advancing Model Forensics with Systematic Parsing, Injection Detection, and Model Provenance Attribution,” with Louisiana State University as prime. In addition, he received an NSF Award of $70K for his project “CRII: OAC: High-Efficiency Serverless Computing Systems for Deep Learning: A Hybrid CPU/GPU Architecture.”

Jennifer Kang-Mieler, BME George Meade Bond Endowed Professor and Chair, has been selected as the 2025 ARVO Foundation Honoree. She was recently recognized at a gala for her leadership in vision science and bioengineering and support of ARVO, the largest vision and ophthalmology organization with a membership of 11,000 professionals.

Yi Bao, CEOE Associate Professor, was ranked No. 1 on ScholarGPS in the field of fiber-optic sensors across three categories: Impact, Quality, and Overall ScholarGPS Rank. He was also ranked in the top 0.05% in the fields of structural engineering, sensors, and optical fibers, and in the top 0.04% across all fields.
Additionally, he was invited by the Editor-in-Chief of Engineering Structures—the leading journal in structural engineering—to serve as an Associate Editor. This will be his fourth associate editor role, alongside his current appointments at ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering, Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, and Frontiers in Physics (all SCI-indexed).

Douglas Luke, CCB undergraduate student, won the David and GG Farber Societal Impact Award for his project titled Designing Biodegradable Chitosan Blends and Copolymers for Sustainable Applications.

Stevens ASME Club is the winner of the ASME Trebuchet Competition against Fairleigh Dickinson University for the second year in a row. Led by Noah Golan, MVP, the team achieved an impressive top launch distance of 170 feet.

Rashika Sugganahali Natesh Babu, SE Ph.D. student mentored by Roshi Nilchiani, has been selected for the prestigious award given to aerospace engineering Leaders for 2025 AIAA Ascendants.

Stevens Undergraduate Research Award Winner

Bertila Bruka, BME undergraduate senior, received the Stevens Undergraduate Research Award and Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship for her upcoming Ph.D. at Georgia Tech. Completed research internships as an Amgen Scholar at Yale and at the NIH, and led undergraduate research initiatives at Stevens.

GEMS Fellowship Award Winner |
Jennifer Gonzales-Pasion, CEMS undergraduate senior, developed computational methods for fuel cell chemical design with Prof. Alyssa Hensley. She was awarded the GEMS fellowship at a national chemical engineering conference.

Tau Beta Pi Fellowship Winner |
Douglas McDonough, ME undergraduate student, received a $10K fellowship from Tau Beta Pi to subsidize his graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University this fall.

Exploring Rare Heart Disease with CRISPRa in NSF Study |
Semanur Ozemre, BME undergraduate student, conducted NSF-funded research on rare heart disease using CRISPRa and lab-grown heart cells. She presented her work at conferences hosted by institutions including MIT, Yale, Michigan, and Stevens.
