Dear Cathedral Family,
“Remember the past with gratitude. Live the present with enthusiasm. Look forward to the future with confidence.”- St. John Paul II

It happens each year, in the same order. The annual American rite of Thanksgiving rolls right into the Advent season, with the boost of gratefulness assisting us. Thomas Merton said, “To be grateful is to see the love of God in everything.” And G.K. Chesterson stated, “When it comes to life, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” Gratitude is no small thing.

God continues to bless us at Cathedral High School. Consider this: Just by being able to practice our faith here on the hill each day without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, we are more blessed than three billion people in the world. I believe we often take our faith for granted and the ability to practice it freely. This is why we pray regularly here; before school, at the start of each class, meeting, and event, and as we end each day. These prayers should always begin with a “thank you” to God, our Creator.

One of the things I thank God for each day is the gifted, faithful educators who work here. Cathedral has undoubtedly been blessed throughout her history with outstanding teachers, coaches, and other adults. Recently, we shared exciting news updates for two of those people. Dave Worland, after 17 and a half years as a tireless advocate for our students and teachers, has accepted a new position as Senior Vice President for Mission and Advancement. Dave has exemplified our mission exceptionally well, and now will take that passion to assist in our fundraising efforts, a never-ending task. A student asked me last week where we get our money from, and I told her that we have to raise every dollar every year. She seemed genuinely surprised. I told her that next time we have to sell raffle tickets, or support a school fundraiser in another way, to stop and remember that we need to do this to keep our school viable. Dave Worland will be highly successful in his new role, as he continues to personify our mission!

Dennis Thomas continues the long tradition of Cathedral enriching the local educational community with our talented people, by recently being named the new Principal of Shortridge High School. Dennis has had two stints at Cathedral, over 20 years, and has served as a classroom teacher, coach, and most recently Vice Principal of Academic Affairs. The Holy Cross educational model has been of particular interest to Dennis, and his focus on educating the hearts and minds of young people will unquestionably continue to drive him in his new role.

Both of these opportunities present our beloved school with two new vital leadership opportunities, and we have already begun the search process for the principal role. Trust me. I know Cathedral is a one-of-a-kind place to be, and we will rely on this as we search and discern our candidates. As we continue to develop and execute on our plan to become the Catholic school of the future, we eagerly anticipate the new energy and vitality that will come with our new leadership.

Gratitude, enthusiasm, and confidence. May we uphold the words of St. John Paul II as we enter the Advent season. After all, we have so much for which to be thankful. Let us be moved in gratitude to thank God, and to share our gifts this season and always. Thank you and may God be with you,

In gratitude, enthusiasm, and confidence,

Speech and Debate Team Starts Strong!

Congratulations to Cathedral's Speech and Debate Team on another strong start to the season. Cathedral has come in first at two tournaments and second place at another, even though we have a smaller team and fewer entries than most of our competitors. Keep up the great work, Cathedral!

                                         Bravo, CaTheatre!!

Congratulations to our CaTheatre Department on another outstanding production! Radium Girls was fantastic!!
Gloria Boone was in the audience for the November 23 performance of Radium Girls. Her mother was an actual Radium Girl who worked in the factories painting dials with radium paint. Gloria's mother died when she was just three years old. She said she felt like CaTheatre's production told her mother's story. Gloria Boone attended the show with her two sons, one of whom is a Cathedral graduate (Craig Mulvany '87) married to another Cathedral graduate (Mona Moore '87 Mulvany). It was an honor to have Gloria Boone and her family in the audience.

                                 Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who made this season's canned food drive such a huge blessing to families in need. Students contributed approximately 19,400 cans and $4,600 that will help Holy Cross Catholic Outreach, St. Vincent de Paul, Boulevard Place, St. Louis de Montfort, Providence Cristo Rey, Mid-North Food Pantry, Lord's Pantry/Anna's House, Little Sisters of the Poor, and Cathedral High School habitat baskets.
