Dear Southwestern Community,
Spring Break is just around the corner, and as our 185th academic year nears its close, I want to take a moment to share key updates on leadership searches, campus priorities, and evolving federal policies that impact higher education.
Vice President for Academic Affairs Search Update
The search committee convened last Thursday with consultants from Russell Reynolds to review the current applicant pool. Thus far, we have received 13 applications from candidates representing a diverse array of institutions, including private and state universities and liberal arts colleges. The committee has identified five candidates for initial Zoom interviews, which will take place March 12–14. Following these discussions, three individuals will be invited to campus for in-person interviews in mid-to-late April. The process is moving forward on schedule, and we appreciate your continued support.
Student Success and Belonging
A question has been raised regarding Dr. David Ortiz’s title adjustment to Vice President for Student Success and Belonging. His position description remains unchanged, although Dr. Ortiz desired a more concise title. This naming represents a broader commitment to the success and well-being of our campus community. Dr. Ortiz acknowledges and emphasizes the importance of an asset-based approach to learning that focuses on strength and capabilities which in turn will help our students be recognized and validated. The usage of "belonging" underscores the importance of creating a campus environment where every student, staff, and faculty feels valued and included. Research shows that students who feel a sense of belonging are more likely to stay enrolled, engage with campus resources, and achieve their academic goals. Equally, faculty and staff feel a greater sense of community. Student Success and Belonging offers a forward-thinking framework for Southwestern to prioritize its DIBE initiatives and focus on building strong and positive relationships and connections with the campus community.
Welcoming Amanda Barber
This Thursday, I’m pleased to welcome Amanda Barber as our new Associate Vice President for Facilities Management. Coming from her position as Executive Director of Planning, Design, and Construction at The University of Texas at Austin, Amanda, a licensed mechanical engineer, brings extensive experience in strategic planning, facilities and asset management, and organizational leadership. Her career spans both higher education and the U.S. Navy, where she has successfully managed complex infrastructure projects and implemented sustainability-focused solutions. Please join me in extending a warm Southwestern welcome to Amanda.
Federal DEI Policy Update
Recent national discussions have focused on policies affecting higher education, particularly in areas related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. On February 14, the Department of Education issued a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) stating that institutions receiving federal funding must eliminate all DEI-related language, ceremonies, and programs by February 28 or risk losing that funding. On February 28, the Department of Education released a followup FAQ more grounded in legal guidance and providing some clarification to the original letter.
Recognizing the shifting legal landscape, the senior staff has conducted an audit of all DEI-related programs and initiatives at Southwestern. We have consulted with the American Council on Education, our legal counsel Scott Schneider, and other experts to assess the implications of the DCL and determine the best course of action for our institution.
Based on Scott’s guidance, the only change we’ve implemented is to add a Southwestern login to our Tactical Plan website. As this situation continues to evolve, we may invite Scott to campus to provide further interpretation, explain its impact on SU, and address any questions. We continue to monitor these developments and their potential impact on our work.
Campus Construction Updates
Finally, construction across campus remains on schedule. Mood-Bridwell is set for a summer move-in, while the Welcome Center and both new residence halls are making excellent progress and remain on track for a Spring 2026 opening.
Sincerely,
