She is recognized as being at the forefront of research in understanding and intervening in social and structural determinants of health and as a thought leader in health equity. In her 22-year public health career, she has served as principal or co-principal investigator of over $38 million in research funding from federal, state, local, and private sources. Dr. Wendel’s research is published in several high impact journals. In addition, she has made 105 scientific presentations around the world.
Dr. Wendel is committed to social justice and equity. Her interdisciplinary background provides perspective on the different cultures, values, languages, and currencies of different disciplines, and her experience with rural, urban, immigrant, indigenous, culturally isolated, undocumented, poor, and minority communities has cultivated a level of cultural humility that helps her effectively navigate diverse spaces.
