Doug Shafer Strikes a Chord for Travelers
A fellow PDX employee observed volunteer musician Doug Shafer (he/him) provide a wonderful performance and exceptional compassion for a passenger.
“I stopped to watch Doug perform ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,' and saw a passenger also pause to listen to the song. As he finished, Doug noticed the traveler starting to cry. He asked her if she was okay. She said, ‘No, my father passed away recently, and that was his favorite song.’
Doug respectfully gave his condolences and asked if she needed a hug, to which she replied, 'Yes.' What a wonderful ambassador for the Port of Portland, showing kindness and his gift of music for all to hear. Thank you, Doug!"

Mosaic tile mural of peach-colored roses.
Worth a Detour: Pratt & Larson’s Tile Mosaics at PDX
It's probably been a while since anyone has told you to go the bathroom. But if you're walking through Concourse B or passing Gate D5, we suggest taking a detour to look at the bathroom. On the inner wall of the entrance, you'll find two of PDX's newest treasures: tile mosaic murals designed by Sara Schmidt and fabricated by Pratt + Larson, Portland-based tile makers. (The Concourse B mural is a pattern of ferns, while the Concourse D mosaic is a field of roses.) Each mosaic showcases the excellence of local artisanship, not to mention an impressive amount of work. How much work? Pratt + Larson owners Belle Iskowitz and Anthony Asch, longtime employees who bought the Inner Southeast factory from founders Michael Pratt and Reta Larson in 2017, shared a few figures that are just as astounding as the art.

Last week, the Snowball Express took off from PDX. The Gary Sinise Foundation hosts a trip to Disney World for the surviving spouses and children of fallen heroes. Thank you to everyone who stepped up to help make the Snowball Express a magical experience  including American Airlines, USO Northwest and the Port of Portland.
