Mongan Reflections from the Director
| |
The tragic events of the past month once again remind us that gun violence is among the most pressing and growing public health crises in our nation today. The racially motivated killings of ten adults in Buffalo, followed a week later by 19 small children and two teachers gunned down in a school in Uvalde leave us at a loss for words. While we once again observe moments of silence, as health care providers and researchers we are called to speak out and address the ongoing carnage that affects us all, while disproportionately resulting in the deaths of people of color, children, and our elderly. As Dr. Chana Sacks, a Mongan faculty member who lost a 6-year-old family member at Sandy Hook, and Co-Director of the MGH Center for Gun Violence Prevention recently stated, "I believe that we can do better. I believe this is not inevitable and that we don't have to live like this". More about the work of the center, and potential solutions approaching gun violence as a public health and health equity imperative can be found at https://www.massgeneral.org/gun-violence-prevention.
As we consider our mission of advancing health equity, the past few months have also been marked by extraordinary recognitions of our senior faculty. We are honored to recognize Dr. Lisa Iezzoni who was recently selected as one of 2022-2023 Radcliffe fellows. The Radcliffe Fellowship selects innovators and leaders spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, as well as writers and journalists from across the nation and the globe “to pursue curiosity-driven research, expand human understanding, and grapple with questions that demand insight from across disciplines.” As one of the nation’s leading disability scientists and advocates for social justice and healthcare reform for people with disabilities, we are truly honored to have Iezzoni as a member of our faculty. Dr. Iezzoni’s career-long pioneering work exemplifies our commitment to advance research and policy reform across the full spectrum of health disparities, including those associated with disability, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and gender identity, mental health, and socioeconomic disadvantage.
Among other extraordinary honors by senior faculty over the past few months was the selection of two of Mongan’s leaders for American Cancer Clinical Research Professor awards. This award is given to scientists at the rank of full professor who have achieved seminal accomplishments in research, mentoring and leadership in cancer prevention. It is a truly remarkable that in 2022, the two 5-year awards were both awarded to two physician leaders at the Mongan Institute. Dr. Andrew Chan, Director of the Clinical Translational Epidemiology Unit and Dr. Jennifer Haas, Director of Research for the Division of Internal Medicine, were announced as recipients of this highly prestigious 5-year award. Even more remarkable, Dr. Jennifer Temel, Co-Director of the Cancer Outcomes Research Education Program at the Mongan, was named in 2020 to this professorship—such that 3 of the 15 total current ACS Clinical Research Professors are Center Directors at the Mongan Institute.
These extraordinary leaders and honors are only a few of the many that are featured in our weekly and monthly updates. At the same time, it is clear that the future of our science and of our field is our outstanding junior and mid-career faculty—making Mongan a truly unique research community. As I reflect on our change leaders, spanning early to senior investigators, I am optimistic about our future capacity to advance innovative team science that to make a difference. At the same time, like all of us, I am impatient to accelerate the pace of our research in population and health care delivery science, and most importantly, to achieve rapid dissemination and uptake of our findings to effect real change in healthcare delivery and policy. I am excited about our next phase of development as we welcome Jason Hagan as Mongan Institute Administrative Director who will be engaged in helping to advance our strategic priorities over the coming months and years.
All the best.
- Steve Bartels, MD, MS
