Happy summer and happy Independence Day! The Osher offices will be closed on Friday July 3 in observance of the holiday. Our summer term is winding down and staff and volunteers are currently very busy planning our upcoming fall session. We will have over 150 classes! Please save the dates for fall term registration opening on August 21 and our Red Butte Garden open house with instructor previews on August 24. More information will be coming in early August.

Each week, Marcie's Movie Club will watch and then discuss a film at Salt Lake Film Society's Broadway Centre Cinemas-SLC's home for independent film. There will be a 1:45 intro, 2:00 film, and a short discussion afterwards. Films will be recently released titles representing a variety of genres, including big-name, independent, documentary, and international titles.
The class fee covers a movie ticket each week. If a class must be missed, club members will be offered complimentary tickets to watch the film or another one on their own at another time. LIMITED, validated parking in the garage next to Broadway - in between Copper Onion and Copper Common - is available on a first come, first served basis. Osher members will connect with one another over independent, first-run cinema, as well as with their fellow global citizens through documentary and international films. As Roger Ebert noted, movies are an empathy machine!

Osher members, how would you like a sneak peek at one of northern Utah's best-kept secrets? Soon, a new visitor center will revolutionize the guest experience at Antelope Island State Park. The massive facility will feature meeting spaces, a classroom, a dry lab, all new exhibitions, and sweeping views of the Great Salt Lake from multiple outdoor terraces. The new building also includes a giant screen theater which will show the custom-created 3-D film Secrets of Great Salt Lake.

The film is 44 minutes long and takes viewers on a journey from ancient Lake Bonneville to modern-day Utah. Antelope Island State Park is inviting the University of Utah's Osher Institute to preview the new facility and the film before it opens to the public. Additionally, Park Ranger James Bustin will give a brief presentation on bird populations and the changing Great Salt Lake. This event, and admission to the state park, is free of charge, but you must register to attend.

For nearly 30 years, Jerry Buie and Bruce Frazier have built meaningful relationships with indigenous healers, medicine people, and traditional elders from around the world, including the Andes and Amazon, regions of Peru, Mongolia, Africa, and native communities here in the United States. This is a unique, first-time opportunity for Osher members to explore these spiritual practices in an accessible and thoughtful way. Please join us for what promises to be an inspiring and meaningful presentation.

Join the Osher Booker Book Group for our August meeting as we discuss June/July's book selection, The Luminaries (2013) by Eleanor Catton. The novel examines the world of shipping, banking, and the gold rush in 1800's New Zealand. At 800 pages, we need two months to read it! We meet monthly at the Osher Building to discuss the previous month's book selection. Everyone is welcome. Perhaps we are "novel" in that we actually discuss the book! Next meeting (September), we will discuss The Life of Pi (2002) by Yann Martel.

Future meetings may rotate to other Osher partner locations and wonderful places that Osher members can enjoy through their membership benefits.
