| Welcome!From the Director..

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the School of Architecture and the formation of DAA, later DAAP, as a college. The long standing strength and reputation of our programs in architecture and interior design insured that we will matriculate our largest group of students in recent memory. We are very proud of the work being done by our faculty and students and the impact we are making on our communities in Cincinnati. This could not happen without the help of the faculty and alumni who support our programs. We also welcome an outstanding group of new and visiting faculty to SAID this Fall. Sergi Serrat, an architect from Barcelona returns as a Visiting Simpson Professor. Andrew Tetrault, who has been an adjunct for three years at SAID, was hired as our newest Professor of Practice. Sergi and Andrew ran a very successful graduate studio over the summer for a sustainable urban district on the land opened up after the demolition of the IRS building in Covington, KY. That work will be exhibited in Covington later this Fall. Peter Yi joins our faculty as an Assistant Professor. Peter spent the past four years as a fellow in the School of Architecture at Michigan. Peter will also serve as a faculty coordinator for our Simpson Urban Futures Lab and programs. Martina Palocci will be a Visiting Assistant Professor in Interior Design this Fall. Martina, originally from Rome, but she has been a design director at Herzog & De Meuron’s office in Basil for the past twelve years. Marina will be teaching second year studio and design electives.
This should be another exciting year at the School with a strong roster of guest lecturers and visitors that you will hear about in the coming weeks. Help us celebrate by visiting the campus and meeting our students. Many have won national and international recognition for their work and are fine representatives of the great traditions of our programs. As School Director I want to thank all of you who have generously supported our programs by providing scholarships and job opportunities for all these talented young architects and designers.
Edward Mitchell Director, School of Architecture and Interior Design

Travel Award
Christine Sima (M-Arch '22) won the Lyceum Competition as an SAID undergraduate here at UC in 2020 and was awarded a generous travel stipend. Due to Covid, she was unable to travel until this year. Read more here about her incredible journey to Scotland and Italy. Truly a trip of a lifetime!
We got a chance to catch up a bit:
SAID: Tell us about your path to winning the Lyceum award? CS: In the spring semester of 2020, Terry Boling held a capstone studio focused on the Lyceum competition. The competition looked at re-envisioning the Chicago bungalow. While doing research, we learned that gentrification was a huge issue within the region. It made me realize that the best design for Chicago couldn't be designed by an architect, it had to be designed by the residents. So I set to work designing an interactive planning game for the community. Originally it was going to be a board game, but when the pandemic hit I went digital with it. The result was a retro-style arcade game with a kit-of-parts architectural approach.
SAID: What advice or wisdom do you have for current students of SAID? CS: Always ask what the real problem is. Good designers find solutions to problems, but great designers eliminate the problem. It's the difference between designing a bandaid and moving the coffee table so you don't stub your toe anymore. Also, look for ways to leverage the opportunities you are given. Making the most of one opportunity can often lead to another. Capstone studio gave the opportunity to focus on a competition submission. The Lyceum fellowship presented the opportunity to travel, and I was able to further leverage that by starting independent research. With that research, I was able to get permission to visit the location of my research; St Kilda, Scotland. It's an extremely remote location and I was lucky enough to be able to stay on the island for several days to examine and photograph the structures there. The writing and photographs are now going to be published in a book! It's surprising how easily one thing can lead to another if you leverage your opportunities with hard work and dedication.
SAID: How has DAAP/ SAID helped shape you to be where you are today? CS: DAAP and SAID helped break down and reshape the way I look at the world. It taught me to ask questions, then throw out those questions and ask new ones. It also taught me that projects can always be improved, but if you work on something forever you'll never start anything new. Life is a balance between improvement and knowing when to shift your focus. It's probably the most valuable lesson I've learned.
SAID: What is next for you? CS: Right now I'm working at an architecture firm in Tampa, and finishing up two books for publication. One will focus on my M.Arch thesis project, while the other is a history and photography book about St Kilda Scotland. If you're interested in my Lyceum travel journey or updates on my publications be sure to follow me @christinesima.arch on Instagram.

Architects Foundation Awards Scholarship to DaMario Walker Brown (M-Arch, '21)
DaMario Walker Brown is currently a Designer at MASS Desig Group. He is passionate about social justice and understanding architecture’s role when it comes to creative placemaking in marginalized communities and addressing homelessness. Prior to joining MASS, DaMario worked full-time for a Lexington-based firm focusing on justice facilities. During graduate school, he held internships at firms based in Cincinnati, Boston, Philadelphia and Lexington.
DaMario received his Master of Architecture degree from SAID in 2021. His thesis focused on examining the existing conditions of an all-black town founded by freed African-Americans during Post-Reconstruction. This project proposed a re-imagining of the town through a series of interventions and a main catalyst that would help revitalize and share the rich history of the town. He also received his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Sciences degree from Western Kentucky University.
The scholarship is for Architect Registration Exam (ARE) candidates who are working toward becoming licensed architects; and to licensed architects pursuing educational enrichment opportunities. Congrats to DaMario!
