University Libraries received a $1.2 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to establish a four-year initiative and faculty fellowship program which support undergraduate student research on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, in alignment with the university's Hispanic-Serving Institution initiatives.

Hispanic Heritage Month at the Libraries |
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), our staff chose some books, resources, and archival photos to share that honor many priceless achievements and contributions of Latinx and Mexican Americans.

Supporting the Mapping Racist Covenants project |
The Mapping Racist Covenants project explores the geography of racist covenants across Tucson neighborhoods and subdivisions, focusing on those enacted between 1912-1968. We funded this project with a three-year grant from the Mellon Foundation.

University of Arizona Press author meet & greet, Sept. 26 |
Authors David Yetman and Alberto Búrquez will show photographs, sign copies of their book, "Exploring Mexico’s Valleys of Cuicatlán and Tehuacán," and tell stories about the culture, history, and environment of an extraordinary region of southern Mexico.

Reclaiming the Border Narrative website launches |
Funded by the Ford Foundation, the Reclaiming the Border Narrative project, a collaboration with Special Collections and the Confluencecenter for Creative Inquiry, recently launched the digital archive website which features projects that "inspire joy and transcend colonial narratives of the U.S.-Mexico border."

Number of 2023 library visitors increased from last year |
In the first 10 days of the 2023 fall semester, all of our libraries had more visitors than we did in the first 10 days of the 2022 fall semester.
In the Main Library alone, we saw 32% more visitors!

Tory Middlebrooks |
Tory Middlebrooks is a Library Information Associate in our Access & Information Services department. Tory started at the Libraries as a student employee and has been here for almost eight years.
The best part of Tory's job is "the unexpected delight of seeing how clever people are," he said.

The University of Arizona Office of Faculty Affairs Black Faculty Speaker Series presents Ibrahim Thiaw, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, who will speak on "Environmental Justice: Seeding the Ground, Planting New Roots."
Registration is highly recommended due to limited seating.

Special Collections staff hosted 55 Udall Scholars in August |
In August, 55 Udall Foundation Scholars from 46 colleges across the U.S. visited Special Collections as part of their program orientation.
Students were selected by a 20-person review committee out of 384 candidates nominated by 172 colleges and universities.

During the summer, staff moved the Fine Arts Library collections to the renovated fifth floor of the Weaver Library.

At CATalyst Studios (in the Main Library) you can use our equipment and supplies, create your own projects, take workshops to learn skills such as sewing, 3D printing, and laser cutting, and much more.
