Dear Graduate School Community, I hope you were able to take some time during spring break to relax and refresh; we are now only 60 days away from Commencement 2022! This month brings lots of exciting programming—the university is celebrating Women’s History Month with several featured speakers and panel discussions.
On March 31 from 3-6 p.m., the Graduate School will be hosting a Spring Career Colloquium with panels on Transitioning from Faculty to Leadership and Leveraging Social Media to Build Your Digital Identity as a Scholar/Researcher. I hope you will also join me for a networking reception to close out this event. You can find the registration information for this event in the link above.
I am also pleased to announce that we have opened our 2022-2023 Graduate School Travel Grant Application for travel between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The 2021-2022 application remains open as well. These funds provide travel support for graduate students presenting their research at major meetings and conferences.
Graduate Student Appreciation Week is April 4 to 8, and I look forward to celebrating you—and the contributions you make to our community of scholars. More information is below on the events we have planned for you!

CSET Presents: An Evening with Jad Abumrad
The program for the Communication of Science and Technology is pleased to present an evening with Jad Abumrad, founder of RadioLab. Drawing from raw tape of interviews with scientists, Jad Abumrad focuses on the inherent struggles in science communication: what happens when you get it wrong, how to fix it and how it's useful to embrace error in the process. Berry Lecture in Public Philosophy: Hosted by The Pilosophy Department
Prof. Nancy Fraser (New School of Social Research) will deliver a talk entitled "Three faces of labor: Uncovering the hidden ties between gender, race, and class". The event will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24. In addition to the public lecture, they will also host a smaller, more private event dedicated to graduate students from the Vanderbilt community. During the spring semester, the Writing Studio will offer weekly writing groups for graduate students and postdocs on Monday afternoons from 2-5 p.m. and Friday mornings from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Students are welcome to attend one or both days and are encouraged to commit to attending each week. 3MRISE: Raising Influence in Science and Engineering Symposium
Taking place on June 13-15, 2022, 3M RISE is a virtual conference primarily intended to introduce emerging female and/or underrepresented science and engineering graduate talent to the wide range of rewarding careers in research and development at one of the world’s most recognized innovation companies. Applicants must have or expect to receive a doctoral degree within 12 months of the RISE event in field of chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, polymer science, biomolecular engineering, biology, data science, computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics/applied math, or software engineering (or other closely related degrees). The Writing Studio Needs You! The Writing Studio is seeking strong, enthusiastic graduate writers from all departments and diverse backgrounds who want to join their team as Graduate Writing Consultants in 2022-2023. They will begin reviewing applications on Friday, March 18. To submit an application or learn more, visit the Writing Studio’s Graduate Consultant Positions page. Interested graduate students are invited to attend this informal, online “grad chat” session to learn more about the job and application process, and get their questions answered.
The English Language Center is looking for Consultants to help international students express themselves in English! If you have experience teaching English or tutoring, strong academic speaking and writing skills, and an interest in working with international students, you could be a 1-to-1 Consultant with the VUELC. 2022 – 2023 Travel Grant Application The Graduate School has opened the 2022-2023 Travel Grant Application for travel between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. We have implemented a few changes to eligibility requirements effective immediately. Thus, changes are noted in the current 2021-2022 and new 2022-2023 applications. Graduate Leadership Institute Student Programming Grants Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. This grant was established to support student-organized programs and events that will enhance the graduate student experience at Vanderbilt. Awards up to $2,000 will be granted through this funding opportunity; learn more on the GLI website.
2022 Fulbright Programs
- The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States by providing opportunities for scholars to conduct research abroad. Full 2022 application guidelines are available here. Please note the following Vanderbilt Campus Deadlines: Mandatory Submission Draft Budget for review: March 25, 2022. Final Application Deadline (all materials including recommendations must be submitted in G5 portal): April 1, 2022. Click here to apply.
- The Fulbright US Student Program supports students and alumni serving as US cultural ambassadors in 140+ countries. Vanderbilt students have the opportunity to serve as English Teaching Assistants, to conduct research across disciplines on six continents or to earn graduate degrees in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Canada. Please note the Vanderbilt campus deadline is May 1, 2022. Potential applicants should contact felllowships@vanderbilt.edu to begin Vanderbilt’s campus nomination process.
- The CIES Fulbright Scholar Program applications are open now for doctoral students, postdocs, and terminal master’s students seeking to teach or conduct research overseas during AY 2023/24. Note: 2022 Fulbright Student Program Applicants cannot defend their dissertation prior to October 11, 2022. ABD applicants and students defending prior to October 11 are generally eligible for the Fulbright Scholar Program. Please contact elizabeth.h.lambert@vanderbilt.edu for additional information. Meharry-Vanderbilt Community Engaged Research Core Community Scholars Award The Community Scholars Award provides support for two graduate or post-graduate trainees to perform a community-engaged research project collaboratively with a community-based organization, during the academic school year. Scholars will also participate in the MV Community Engaged Research Core, which supports the development of community-engaged and community-based research as well as fosters and supports relationships between the community and academic partners.
