Colleagues in the Division of Student Affairs,
Happy New Year! I hope you were able to take some time away during the current winter break period — it is hard to believe students will be joining us over the next week to kick-off the spring 2023 semester.
As we prepare for spring, I’d like to share several key upcoming dates:
-
Monday, January 16, is a university holiday to honor the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There are numerous events you can participate in to honor his life and achievements, including The 36th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration, which will be held on January 16 from 2-3:30 p.m. in Graham Chapel. More information on this event is included below. Whether you can attend or not, I encourage you to use some time next Monday to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King’s.
-
Our January Division of Student Affairs monthly meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in Risa Commons. Mary McKay, Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives, and Joe MacDonald, Assistant Provost, Strategy and Communications, will be joining us to provide an update on the university’s Here & Next strategic plan. Please make every effort to attend in-person.
-
Finally, our Division of Student Affairs strategic plan is moving forward with great momentum, and I’m excited to share that one of your ideas from our strategic planning breakout sessions late last spring is coming to fruition! Starting this spring, we will provide up to fifty dollars to student affairs employees to connect with a student, or group of students, with whom you have not previously connected. The goals of this program are to create a sense of engagement and belonging for students through our professional staff by establishing new points of connection; to provide an opportunity for students to be mentored by our Student Affairs staff; and to gain insight into how students are doing. There are three important notes to share:
- We ask that you not take a student employee you supervise to lunch.
- We will be sharing details on how the program will work in an email to the Division by the end of next week.
-
This is a pilot for the spring 2023 semester. We will assess the usage of this program and the outcomes over the summer.
I look forward to seeing many of you next week!
Warmly,
|

New Fitness Equipment at the Sumers Rec Center |
Over the winter break, new cardio and strength equipment were installed in the Sumers Rec Center with the goal of enhancing the health and well-being of our campus community. The updated equipment replaced all existing cardio and cable-operated weight equipment. With approximately 2,000 visitors per day, the new equipment will bolster the department's efforts to promote healthy excellence across campus.
This significant investment is an illustration of the Athletic & Recreation Department's commitment to providing the most comprehensive/best value fitness and well-being experience in the St. Louis region. Sign-up for a Rec Center membership and check out the new equipment.

The sculpture "The Bunny" – located just south of Oak Walk, near Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus – is actually called "Thinker on a Rock" and was designed by Barry Flanagan, an Irish-Welsh sculptor. There are eight casts of the sculpture located worldwide, including one on O’Connell Street in Dublin, Ireland as well as one located in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
