Every 7 years in the Jewish tradition, there is a year called Shmita. It's such a powerful idea: for a whole year we let the land and soil rest. It's where the term Sabbatical comes from. Every 7 years, professors rest their brains and do something new. It is also very linked to the idea of Shabbat and resting your brain, body and soul every 7 days.
This Jewish year (5782), which began last week with Rosh Hashana, is a Shmita year.
I wrote about Shmita in my book 24/6 and I've always wanted an opportunity to go deeper on the subject. So, when one of my favorite people Rabbi Amichai Lau-Levi, who runs a very progressive, artist-driven Jewish community in NYC called Lab/Shul, asked me to kick off the discussion tonight, I jumped right into the fertile soil of this subject. I'm also very excited to hear from the other speakers tonight talking about Shmita as it relates to the environment, social justice, joy and survival.
Join us tonight online 6:15pm PT/9:15pm ET (The whole discussion will be 45 mins, my presentation 10mins. It will be recorded)
Everyone's invited:)
