Davone Morales, an SMPA senior and GW-TV general manager, received a $2,500 scholarship and attended the WHCA dinner alongside some of the country’s most prominent journalists last night.

The first annual SMPA Celebration Night recognized student achievements with over $150,000 in prizes and scholarships. The evening also featured remarks by distinguished alumni and friends of SMPA and a faculty versus students trivia game (the students won).

JMC SPECIAL HONORS APPLICATIONS
To apply for Journalism and Mass Communication special honors, graduating JMC majors must have a minimum 3.7 GPA and a portfolio of published work. A letter to faculty on the SMPA awards committee should outline achievements and career goals.
Applications for May 2018 graduates will close on Friday, May 4 at 11:59 p.m.

This annual $1,000 prize recognizes exceptional writing projects focused on the District of Columbia in GW undergraduate classes.The prize honors Sgt. Julian Clement Chase, who was killed in action in Afghanistan after his acceptance to attend SMPA.

CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION FALL 2018 REPORTING WORKSHOP
The Chronicle is hosting a series of workshops with student journalists. Learn how to read university tax forms, meet with a Chronicle mentor and perfect your résumé and cover letter. The fall workshop will take place from September 6  7.

Janet Steele presented the keynote address at the Journalism in Asia symposium at the University of Houston.
Cheryl W. Thompson was part of a panel on "How to conduct investigative interviews" at the Investigative Reporters and Editors Watchdog Workshop held at GW's Jack Morton Auditorium and spoke to journalism students at Bowie State University about investigative reporting.
Silvio Waisbord published “Revisiting mediated activism” in Sociology Compass and gave the presentation "Who Cares? When Society Fails to Safeguard Journalists at Risk" at the launch of the Center for Media at Risk at the University of Pennsylvania.

CPJ's annual Free The Press campaign raises awareness of journalists imprisoned worldwide.
