One of the newest Osprey alumni, Brennan Wojtyla, graduated from UNF in December 2022 with a degree in graphic design. He was recently named student artist-in-residence at MOCA Jacksonville. His work will be on display there beginning with a soft opening Friday, Jan. 20 followed by an opening reception Wednesday, Feb. 1 during Art Walk, which also serves as his first solo exhibition.
Wojtyla got into art at an early age, having been encouraged to think creatively by his parents, though he never considered it as a career until recently. Through the help of scholarships, the Jacksonville native decided to stay close to home and attend UNF. He loved the more personal atmosphere of the University, being able to work closely with professors and peers on passion projects. However, when the campus shut down due to the pandemic, he was given an opportunity to try new things with his work. He considers the pieces he made during this period to be important in his development as an artist.
Wojtyla's favorite moment as a UNF student was taking sculpture classes with professors Jenny Hager and Lance Vickery. They gave him great mentorship and guidance throughout some of his crazier projects and gave him the freedom to bend his academic work to fit his personal practice. He first became aware of the Artist-in-Residence opportunity during one of his sculpture classes and used his graphic design expertise to prepare a digital portfolio to submit for consideration. “When I got selected, I was super stoked," Wojtyla said. "Now I have funding and space to do bigger pieces.”
Like many artists, Wojtyla says that his work is heavily influenced by his surroundings. Since Jacksonville is an industrial city, he prefers to utilize industrial processes instead of traditional artistic techniques. His work incorporates materials and objects you may find on the side of the road, such as pieces of wood, a slab of concrete or a toilet. He decontextualizes these industrial forms and recontextualizes them into fine art pieces using spray paint and other techniques. He chooses to create in this manner because he prefers his artistic expressions to be more work-based instead of artistic-based.

When asked how he hopes others interpret his art, Wojtyla said, “In a perfect world, I want someone to look at my work and hopefully realize that they can find beauty and inspiration in everyday occurrences and forms.” The pieces he’s showcasing at MOCA will coincide with a self-based practice known as “Cathedral of Labor.” The goal is to draw people’s attention to traditional forms and practices of everyday life that go unnoticed by giving them a different appearance.
Wojtyla said he is grateful for the assistance he’s received from the MOCA staff and shared he’s gained a wealth of knowledge thus far from his residency. Following his show at MOCA, he will be attending residency programs in Germany, spending three months in Leipzig before traveling to Berlin.
