Hello Anglers and friends,

I hope you all are well and safe. While many of us have important looming concerns, we still can’t help but wonder the fate of our precious Opener! I was hoping at this time to have some clear answers, but I do not. I have reached out to anyone and everyone I can to gather information and see how discussions of the issue are progressing. It is certainly on the minds of CA Fish and Wildlife, the Fish and Game Commission, as well as those of Mono & Inyo County Health and Government Officials. As you know, Trout Opener is a big deal, for all of our customers (who desperately want a break right now) but also to our local economy and work force. The discussions being had by the powers that be are not taken lightly.

Let me tell you what I do know. Both Mono and Inyo County have cases of Covid-19. Like most of the country, we have very limited (i.e. not enough) medical facilities and supplies to combat what is seen as inevitable spread within our communities. This past week, efforts have been to increase those supplies and facilities in order to respond and treat patients requiring hospitalization. For these reasons, our Officials are doing what they can to keep Mono County at a base population and this means for now, not encouraging visitation.

Currently, and until further notice, we are all supposed to stay at home and leave only for essential functions. CDFW has cancelled all Fishing Contest Permits through April 30th.  Right now, Mono County has banned short term rentals until April 30th. Some of you have already had your reservations (for lodging) canceled, but there is still some hope this ban could lift in consideration of the Opener. At Crowley, we are only canceling for customers requesting to do so. If we find there was to be a delay in the opener, we would do our best to re-arrange the current reservations to accommodate our Opener Rentals. I understand my options, whether there is a delay or not, will inevitably disappoint many.

I never want to do that. Right now, I am waiting till next week when more government meetings are scheduled to see if a determination is made by authorities regarding the fate of Trout Opener, and whether I will be permitted to operate.

Many of you will want to cancel in an effort to follow the order and protect yourselves, some of you will want to re-schedule for what could be a new opener date, some of you will find its best you return to work ASAP and that fishing trips are not prudent since you have been out of work. Whatever the case may be, we will do our best to work with (and refund) everyone necessary. We have plans to expand our limited winter office capabilities to answer calls and make changes next week as needed. We will be re-opening our other phone line at 760-935-4043.

Please understand, that we don’t exactly get to do what we’d like here, I am in a very difficult position and must heed directives by the authorities in my community. We have seen in many examples across our state, that Governor Newsom’s order did not do enough, and we have since seen many closures of parking areas, beaches, & other developed public sites (Including our Inyo National Forest). Also understand that no changes to the Fishing Regulations have happened. We are simply trying to prepare for any possible outcomes.

I will continue to communicate as I get information, and please forward this email to others in your party who may not be on our list.

  Sincerely,

Abbie Thomason
