Adding something “extra” to the spray tank is not a new or novel phenomenon in agriculture; however, in today’s economic, social, and regulatory environment it is in agriculture’s best interest to think twice before blindly adhering to this mentality. Dr. Paul Mitchell, UW Ag Economist and Associate Dean, terms this practice “the more-on principle”. In its simplest form, this principle is founded on the belief that the more I put on the less downside risk my operation will be exposed to.

HPAI in Dairy Cattle - LATEST UPDATE

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is an emerging issue that poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of dairy herds.

As of April 29:

There are no reported cases of HPAI in Wisconsin
USDA APHIS requires mandatory testing of lactating cattle moving across state lines prior to transport

MILK2024 - Updated Resource for Corn Silage Comparisons

Corn silage is a vital part of dairy rations in the United States, as it provides a good source of energy and effective fiber and because homegrown forages are more cost effective and nutritionally sound than purchased concentrate feeds. Hybrid selection is a key opportunity to influence the nutritive value of corn silage, but many factors must be considered during hybrid selection.

In response to the release of updated Nutrient Requirements for Dairy Cattle (NASEM 2021), the MILK2006 program has been updated to better meet the needs of dairy producers. Learn more and download the updated program today!

NRCS Sign Up - Environmental Quality Incentives Program - Applications due May 17.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is announcing our 2nd Environmental Quality Incentives Program(EQIP) sign-up through May 17th. Any producer that may be interested in implementing conservation this summer as well as starting a conversation for 2025 planning and implementation can apply for this opportunity. NRCS accepts applications on a continuous basis and encourages interested groups/individuals to work with their local NRCS office to work through the planning process.
