Eco Holiday Guide

The holiday season can become overwhelming. The early darkness, cold temperatures, the social gatherings, gift giving, etc...they all add up. There is also the added waste (holiday trees, shipping boxes, gift wrap, and more), which is amplified at multifamily communities where trash and recycling is shared.
In this edition, we'll provide tips and resources to help property managers prepare for the additional waste and  residents to consider alternatives (which can save money, too!).
As always, you can request free recycling and waste reduction resources using our online multifamily order form.

Holiday Planning
Planning ahead and sharing expectations with residents before they are looking to discard items can help prevent chaos. Here's a quick holiday checklist:
Trees Make arrangements with your garbage company or find a local scout troop or other organization to recycle real trees (for a fee). Be sure to communicate to residents where they should place their discarded trees and when. (Flocked trees must go in the garbage.)
Reuse Many holiday items can be reused year after year, which not only saves resources, but also money. Gift bags, bows, ribbons, and even gift tags can be reused, so rather than tossing them, set them aside and store them for next year.
Recycling* Make sure your holiday items make it into the correct bin. Common recycling items include: boxes (flattened), wrapping and tissue paper (no glitter, non-metalic), cards (no glitter, no singing cards), and metal popcorn/cookie tins.
Garbage* To protect our recycling system and keep costs down, these holiday items belong in the trash: candy wrappers, plastic bags/wrap (can be taken back to grocery stores for recycling), hard plastic packaging, ribbons/bows, metallic/glitter gift wrap, cards with glitter, string lights (some recycling drop-off locations exist) and artificial trees.
Gift Giving Experiences can be a great alternative to "stuff," create lasting memories, and drastically cut down on waste (garbage and recycling). Rather than brand new, consider finding a gently-used alternative online or at a thrift store and/or make the gift wrap part of the gift (e.g. wrap the gift in a kitchen towel).

*If garbage and recycling bins regularly overflow during the holidays, property managers may want to consider scheduling an extra pickup (for a fee).
Batteries Beware
To keep our communities, garbage/recycle truck drivers, and waste facilities safe, it is everyone's responsibility to keep batteries out of our bins.
When crushed by the truck, especially rechargeable batteries like those found in cell phones, cordless vacuums, tools, and more, the batteries are quick to ignite and can burn very hot and quick. It is important to remove batteries from our devices before we discard them and property dispose of the batteries. If a battery cannot be easily removed from a device, take the whole device to a drop-off facility. Options include:
  • Metro South Household Hazardous Waste Facility
    2001 Washington St., Oregon City
    Daily 9am - 4pm
    Free

  • Batteries Plus Bulbs
    Oregon City, Portland, Tualatin
    Hours vary
    Fees vary

  • Many hardware stores (like Lowe's & Home Depot) also accept tool batteries and other rechargeable batteries for free.

Adverse Weather
As a reminder, safety is our top priority. If adverse weather makes the collection of garbage and recycling unsafe, collection service may be postponed until it is safe to do so. When service resumes, garbage will be prioritized. Please help your driver by maintaining access to bins. And remember, just because your road and parking lot may be clear, other parts of the region may make it unsafe for the trucks to make it to you.
Visit www.clackamas.us/inclement to review the adverse weather policy.
