Important Update for Parents

Dear Class of 2020 Parents,

Over the weekend, Father Mark Poorman, C.S.C., our President, and Dr. Tom Greene, our Provost, wrote to graduating seniors and graduate students to provide additional insight into the University’s decision to host a virtual Commencement this May and celebrate the Class of 2020 at a future date. Please read the message in its entirety.

We also share below an email that was sent to your student containing updates on the online Commencement Exercises for May 3rd. We kindly ask that you encourage your student to take these important steps by the necessary deadlines.

Dear Class of 2020,

We can only imagine the array of emotions bundled up in what has become March and April of your senior year. We miss you. Our hearts are with you. And we acknowledge that our disappointment pales in comparison to yours and your fellow graduates. We wish that we could be together on our beautiful home, The Bluff.

We write to share updates on your online commencement exercises. It is important you know how fully we appreciate that this version of May 3 does not replace the pomp and circumstance worthy of your graduation. Nevertheless, we do hope that we can come together as a community to acknowledge and celebrate your academic achievements. UP faculty, staff, and administrators are working to hold your commencement ceremony in a special place in the University’s history.

Please note the following steps:

Due April 9: Complete the Class of 2020 Career Center Survey.

A link to this survey will be emailed directly to your UP email on Friday, April 3.
Important - The address you list in your survey will be used for mailing your Commencement Box.

Due April 16: Submit information for the Online Commencement Ceremony.

A link to this survey will be emailed directly to your UP email on Tuesday, April 7.
Name Pronunciation – Provide pronunciation. Your name will be read aloud during the ceremony.
Photo – Upload a photo. This photo will be displayed during the ceremony when your name is called.

Commencement Box

Many helping (and socially distant) hands are putting together a Class of 2020 Commencement Box to be sent to the address you list in the Career Center survey. We hope this allows your graduation celebration to be filled with UP pride and brings a little piece of The Bluff to you and your loved ones. The box will include:

Cap & Gown (Hood for Masters/Doctoral students)
Stole of Gratitude
Diploma cover
Commencement programs
A few surprises from your UP family
