Division of Student Affairs Colleagues,
Happy April! It is hard to believe we are in the final few weeks of the spring semester. Soon, we will congratulate graduates, gather for our Student Affairs Professional Development Day, and head into summer.
Because this time of year is brimming with activities, please make sure the following dates are on your radar:
-
The April student affairs monthly divisional meeting is Wednesday, April 12 in Risa Commons on the South 40. Light refreshments begin at 8 a.m. with the formal agenda running 8:30-9:30 a.m. Our April meeting will feature Michelle Gelven, Director of Commencement and Convocation. Michelle will provide an overview of Commencement 2023.
-
The university’s first Giving Day — a fun, 24-hour fundraising blitz — is slated for April 19. Make a gift, in whatever amount makes sense for you, to the area of the university that means the most to you. Every gift made on April 19 will count toward the day’s goal of 1,500 donors. See my email to the Division sent on Friday, March 24, for more information.
- We will not hold a monthly divisional meeting in May. However, our Student Affairs Professional Development Day is Tuesday, May 23. As details are finalized, please refer to the event website regularly.
Finally, nominations for the 2023 Student Affairs Awards are now being accepted. Staff working within the Division are eligible for nomination and recipients in all categories will be announced on May 23 as part of our professional development programming. Please see the awards page here and direct questions to studentaffairs@wustl.edu. Nominations are due by EOD on Friday, May 5.
See you soon!

Spring WILD Volunteers Needed |
|
|
|
The Social Programming Board (SPB) will host the Spring Walk In Lay Down (WILD) on Mudd Field on Friday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. This event cannot run successfully without the support of volunteers from our amazing colleagues in the Division of Student Affairs. Volunteering for the event shows the members of the SPB that campus partners collaborate and take time out of their schedules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for students.
To volunteer at WILD, please sign up for a shift here. Volunteers are asked to arrive 15-minutes prior to their shift

start time. As a thank you for your time, a meal will be provided to all who volunteer. Jasmine James from Campus Life will follow-up with a detailed instructional email as the week of WILD grows closer. In the meantime, any questions can be directed to Jasmine.
Thank you for making this event possible for our students!

Sexual Assault Awareness Month |
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center at WashU will host a number of events throughout the month to increase awareness of the impact of sexual assault. Denim Day on April 26 is an internationally recognized day of solidarity for survivors of sexual violence.
RSVP encourages students, staff and faculty to participate by wearing denim to support survivors of sexual violence. Staff and faculty are invited to take a photo wearing denim and share it on social media with the hashtag #WashUWearsDenim. You can also follow along with #WashUWearsDenim on @washu_rsvp, @sarahatwashu and @livewashu Instagram accounts.
Supporting survivors can look many different ways: from referring them to a confidential resource to creating institutional change. This month (and always) please be sure to engage with students through a trauma informed lens.

During the March Divisional meeting, HR staff members talked about the Wellness Champion Program. As part of the Program, a Wellness Champion can apply for up to $500 per year to support a wellness initiative for their department. On March 28, the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) Wellness Champion, Lara Jennings, hosted a staff wellness day initiative for their department. The OISS team shared a day together participating in wellness activities including a morning movement practice with sound bowls led by Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellness Meghann Feely, chair massages with Move by BJC, and a tour of the MyWay to Health suite with cooking demonstrations by registered dietitian, Erin McGraw.
If you are interested in promoting a culture of health and wellness in your department, you can reach out to Lara or any other Wellness Champion in the Division who can help talk more about their role as a champion!

ThurtenE 2023: Melodies and Memories will be held April 14-16. The nation’s largest and oldest student-run carnival is presented by members of ThurtenE Honorary — 13 juniors who bear responsibility for the continuation of the tradition.
ThurtenE’s predecessor, “Younivee Surrkuss,” was first held in 1907. The seven-hour festival ran much like a real circus and featured sideshows and a main

attraction. General admission was 10 cents, sideshows were a nickel and proceeds were donated to the Athletic Association. A crowd of 400 made the event a roaring success.
Over a century later, the ThurtenE carnival still bears a resemblance to its ancestor. However, the “Big Top” has been replaced by amusement rides, student-constructed game and food booths, cultural performances and interactive games. The event now attracts thousands and proceeds benefit charity.
