Bahram Beyzai's (Downpour, Stranger and the Fog) BASHU, THE LITTLE STRANGER was voted "Best Iranian Film of all time" in November 1999 by the Persian movie magazine Picture World poll of 150 Iranian critics and professionals. During the Iran-Iraq War. Bashu, a young boy loses his house and all his family. Scared, he sneaks into a truck that is leaving the area. He gets off the truck in the Northern part of the country, where everything from landscape to language is different. He meets Naii, who is trying to raise her two young children on a farm, and quickly forms a bond with her. Subtitles. 120 min.

Poland, 1981, Andrzej Wajda
MAN OF IRON, Wajda's remarkable sequel to Man of Marble, welds newsreel footage of the Solidarity strike to fiction in a strong investigative drama. A radio producer is given the mission to discredit the man who started the Gdansk shipyard strike, Maciej Tomczyk, the son of Mateusz Birkut, who had died in 1970 in the first shipyard strikes.
