Message from the Interim Director of Extension

Last week, UArizona's Water Resources Research Center hosted another successful Annual Conference. The presenters included an impressive list of Who's Who in water use and policy in Arizona.  I challenged the attendees to look for opportunities where they can contribute to help address the many water challenges Arizona is facing. Many thanks and congratulations to Dr. Sharon Megdal and her team for a very successful conference.

18th annual Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems (RISE) Symposium

Saturday, 05 November 2022, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

University of Arizona Marley Building Auditorium (Room 230), Tucson, Arizona

The 18th annual Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems (RISE) Symposium will be held Saturday, 05 November 2022, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on the University of Arizona campus.  The objectives of the symposium are to share recent results of research at the USDA-ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) and the University of Arizona Santa Rita Experimental Range (SRER), to encourage future research activities at the WGEW and the SRER, and to promote the WGEW and the SRER as outdoor scientific laboratories.

The Symposium will feature invited speakers presenting recent or ongoing research on the WGEW, the SRER or other outdoor laboratories in the region. There is also a Student Poster competition with monetary awards. Special speakers this year are Paula Mabee, Director of NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network, and Petey Mesquitey, legendary natural historian of the Borderlands Region.

Conditions resulting from the Covid-19 Pandemic could require a Remote meeting format (via Zoom) as in 2021 or cancellation as in 2020. We are preparing for that possibility and will provide updates as we approach November 2022.  Given this possibility, we ask that you register online to ensure that we can communicate the status of the meeting with you via email, and send you the Zoom links to attend Remotely. If held Remotely, we will not charge the Registration fee.

Please use the website http://www.tucson.ars.ag.gov/rise/ to view the RISE program, to register for the symposium, to submit poster abstracts and to enter the student poster contest, view talks and posters from past years, and see updates related to the possible changes due to the Covid Pandemic.
