MPS substitutes vote YES to collective bargaining
MPS substitute teachers voted overwhelmingly to continue being represented by the MTEA in collective bargaining with MPS. 98% of all substitute teachers who voted in the recertification election voted YES, with 62% of all eligible voters casting a yes vote.
The election, which ended at noon today, was a re-run of last fall’s recertification election. The first election was declared invalid because the list of eligible voters MPS originally provided omitted over 100 substitute teachers who should have been able to vote.
“We are pleased that substitute teachers will maintain the right to negotiate wages with the district,” said Doris Cahn, president of the Milwaukee Substitute Teachers' Association.
“The MTEA is a strong advocate for educators in all of our bargaining units – teachers, educational assistants, substitutes, and bookkeepers," said Bob Peterson, MTEA President. "We are pleased that all four units have voted to recertify our union.”
Thanks to all the substitute teachers who voted, and to all the MTEA leaders and members who helped get out the vote. Forward together!
