2023 Literary Awards

$1000 cash prize

The Los Angeles Review is open for submissions until June 30th 2023.

Only previously unpublished submissions will be considered for the $1,000 cash prize, as well as publication in LAR Online and the new best-of print addition. The winner will be selected in fall of 2023 and announced via our website, and a Red Hen Press press release. We encourage submitters to familiarize themselves with our journal before sending in work.

Award Categories

The Los Angeles Review Poetry Award is a prize given annually for exceptional works of poetry. This season's judge is M. Soledad Caballero. Please submit poems of no more than 50 lines each (not including line spaces or numbering). Authors may submit up to three poems with each entry.

The Los Angeles Review Short Fiction Award is a prize given annually for exceptional works of fiction. This season's judge is Carlos Allende. Please submit a story no longer than 2,500 words. 

The Los Angeles Review Flash Fiction Award is a prize given annually for exceptional works of fiction. This season's judge is John Weir. Please submit a piece of 1,000 words or less. 

The Los Angeles Review Creative Nonfiction Award is a prize given annually for exceptional work of nonfiction. This season's judge is Chelsey Clammer. Please submit a piece no longer than 2,500 words. 

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us immediately at editor@losangelesreview.org if your works are accepted elsewhere. The winning poems/stories will be published in the new LAR Online and included in the annual best-of print edition.
