(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) – The California State Fair is proud to present Viva El Mariachi, an unforgettable celebration of Regional Mexican music and culture, on Sunday, July 20, as part of the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage. This dynamic event will feature headlining performances by acclaimed artists Majo Aguilar and Joss Favela, along with the biggest Youth Mariachi Competition in the state earlier in the day, spotlighting young musicians from across California.
From a very young age, Majo Aguilar developed a love for singing, dancing, and songwriting. She wrote her first song at the age of six, and since then, she hasn’t stopped writing, singing, and dancing. Her songs are about love, and the complexity and uniqueness of being alive. Her motto is: "If it’s not sung from the heart, it’s worthless," and her dream is to connect with the world through her songs and dance. She comes from a very important musical family in Mexican history, as her grandparents are Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre, and her father is Antonio Aguilar Jr.
Joss Favela has quickly become one of the most influential young voices in Regional Mexican music, earning acclaim as both a songwriter and producer. Born in Caitime, Sinaloa, he began writing songs at 12 and launched his career after reaching the finals of Código Fama at 13. By 14, he had recorded two solo albums.
Favela’s songwriting has powered chart-topping hits for artists like Julión Álvarez, Banda El Recodo, and Alejandro Fernández. His talent has earned him multiple ASCAP “Songwriter of the Year” awards, a Latin GRAMMY® nomination, and recognition from SACM and Bandamax.
In 2016, he debuted as a singer-songwriter with Hecho a Mano, earning Latin GRAMMY® and GRAMMY® nominations. His follow-up album Caminando debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart. With hits like “Me Hubieras Dicho” and “Pienso en Ti” (with Becky G), Favela continues to captivate audiences across Mexico and the U.S., blending heartfelt lyrics with a powerful voice that defines a new generation of Regional Mexican music.
Earlier in the day, the Viva El Mariachi Youth Mariachi Competition will take place at the Fair, celebrating the next generation of mariachi performers. Talented young musicians from throughout the state will take the stage, demonstrating their passion, skill, and dedication to one of Mexico’s most beloved musical traditions.
“Viva El Mariachi isn’t just a concert, it’s a cultural celebration,” said Tom Martinez, CEO of California Exposition & State Fair. “We’re proud to showcase talent like Majo Aguilar and Joss Favela, while also lifting up the next generation of mariachi musicians through our youth competition. This is what the Fair is all about, celebrating talent, heritage, and community.”
