Changing the energy paradigm ... without letting the lights go dim
The challenges the world is facing in regard to energy supply and climate change are huge. Fortunately, rapid technological developments are opening up new opportunities to transform the way energy is generated, distributed and used. This has disrupted the traditional energy paradigm and opened up new business opportunities for electricity supply that will challenge traditional models. How are forward-thinking utilities responding to this challenge, and realistically how will the future electricity grid evolve? Read more

Design as Democracy: A Workshop on Community Planning & Participatory Research
How can we design places that fulfill urgent needs of the community, achieve environmental justice, and inspire long-term stewardship? How can we respectfully engage with communities in participatory research? By bringing community members to the table, we open up the possibility of exchanging ideas meaningfully and transforming places powerfully. In this workshop, Marcia McNally, Randolph Hester, and Sibyl Diver will share ideas from the new book Design as Democracy: Techniques for Collective Creativity, and introduce interactive methodologies for participatory planning, design, and research. The Effects of Technology on Human Interactions
In this second symposium of the series, CASBS presents a panel conversation featuring two 2017-18 CASBS fellows – sociologist of technology Judy Wajcman and linguist Sarah Ogilvie – as well as CASBS faculty fellow Abraham Verghese, a physician and novelist renowned for his examinations of the human side of medicine. They will discuss modern technology’s transformational impact on social interactions, including 1) the role of medical practitioners, recipients of care, and their relations with each other; 2) the values, mindsets, and norms of people born after the introduction of the World Wide Web, as reflected through language usage; and 3) shifting individual, cultural, and organizational conceptions of time, time management, efficiency, and speed in advanced capitalist societies. These focal points will help facilitate a broader dialogue with the audience about the relationship between recent technological advances and the human experience. Read more.

Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. This lack of female participation has led to an alarming dearth of content about women and art in popular online research tools. Art+Feminism's Edit-a-thons and other initiatives make an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements to art and feminism related subjects on Wikipedia. Since 2014, over 280 Art+Feminism edit-a-thons have taken place across the world, creating and improving an estimated 4,600 articles.
The Bowes Art & Architecture Library (355 Roth Way, Room 201, on the Stanford campus) will host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on International Women’s Day to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia and encourage female editorship. The edit-a-thon will include tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials, and refreshments. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, with a special welcome to transgender and cisgender women. Read more.
