International Graduate Orientation Newslette Three

Online Pre-Departure Orientation

This program will help you prepare for your arrival at Miami University. It includes links to important websites, examples of documents, and short quizzes. Please complete all three parts of the Online Pre-Departure Orientation before you depart for the United States.
COMPLETE ONLINE PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION

Online ISSS Check-in

The online ISSS check-in site is open! Submit copies of your passport, visa, and I-20 or DS-2019 before you arrive. Please review the document check webpage and follow the steps. The check-in must be completed before orientation begins, so we recommend doing it as soon as possible. Note that you will not receive a confirmation when you are finished, but if you have gone through all the screens and uploaded your documents, you are done. You can log in as many times as you need to, but once you upload a document, you cannot upload it again.

English Placement Test and SPEAK Test

If you are not from an native English-speaking country or completed a degree in the United States, you will be required to take two tests online: a written English Proficiency Test (EPT) and a SPEAK Test before arrival. Later, you will receive two separate emails about the EPT and SPEAK Test with further instructions. Please watch for these emails.

Health Insurance

All international students are required to enroll in the Miami University Aetna Student Health Plan. Exceptions to this requirement may be made for students who provide proof of one of the following:
  • full sponsorship by a government agency, which includes health insurance
  • comparable health insurance from a United States employer
Submit the International Student Insurance Waiver Request Form (located under "Other Student Services") no later than August 1, 2019 to request an exception based on one of the above categories. Note that your request will be denied if your insurance policy is not comparable to the Miami University Aetna Student Health Plan. Also, note that international students will not have the option to use the Aetna waiver portal online to be exempt from the Student Health Plan.

Immunization Form

Please review Miami University's immunization requirements prior to arrival. All new students are required to submit an Immunization Form before registering for classes. You may complete the form (available through the website linked above) and bring it with you, or you may bring other documentation of your vaccinations (for example, your "yellow book") with you in order to complete the form during orientation. You will be scheduled for a time to visit Student Health Services during orientation. If you require any additional vaccinations, you will be able to obtain them through Student Health Services on campus.
Important Notes:
  • If you have had chickenpox already, you have two options: get a titer to prove that you have immunity, or get the varicella vaccination.
  • In some countries, the Tdap vaccination is only given to children. Because whooping cough is an emergent issue, we require that all college students have the Tdap vaccination. If you cannot receive it in your home country, you'll obtain it at Miami.
  • It is better to get multiple doses for one vaccination in the same location. If you have not started getting the Hepatitis B vaccine, we suggest you wait and get the Hepatitis B vaccine here at Miami since you have to wait 6 months for Dose 3 after getting Dose 1.
  • Upon your arrival, you are required to take a tuberculosis (TB) test. This must be done inside the United States. We will schedule a time for you to complete this requirement during your orientation.
If you have any questions about the immunization form, the tuberculosis test, or Miami's student health insurance plan, please email shsmiami@trihealth.com.

Banking

On campus there are two banking options:
There are also many banks located in Oxford, which you can search for online. When you open a bank account, you need to bring your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, local address, and student ID card.
We suggest you do not bring more than $500 in cash with you to the United States. You will have the opportunity to open a bank account within your first few days on campus.

Billing

You will be billed after you complete your registration during orientation. An email will be sent to your MiamiOH.edu email address. Payment is due by the first day of classes, August 26, 2019. Visit the payment page to access instructions for viewing your balance and making payments.

Methods to pay:

  • International wire via Flywire
  • Electronic check (no additional fee) - see Helpful Hints for Paying Your Bill by Check
  • Credit card (not recommended due to the convenience fee that is charged)
  • Payment Plans that allow a semester’s bill to be paid over a period of three months (an enrollment fee will be charged)
  • Graduate Assistants (GA) who receive stipends in the form of monthly paychecks are eligible to sign up for payroll deduction for the purpose of paying their semester fees. When a student signs up for payroll deduction, they agree to allow the university to deduct any and all charges from their univeresity paycheck.
Warning: Please be careful to pay tuition and fees only to Miami University. Outside agents and companies who state they are sending you a bill for Miami tuition and fees, and instruct you to pay the company directly, are fraudulent and should be reported to our office.
If you have questions about billing, please email OneStop@MiamiOH.edu.
Next issue, we will be covering the following topics: University expectations, academic expectations, campus regulations, and iPOL profiles. Stay tuned!
