JANUARY 
Over the winter, faculty members from NYU Shanghai and NYU attended the inaugural Serendipity Research Confluence at NYU Abu Dhabi. As the year kicked off, Vice Chancellor Jeff Lehman was elected chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and over 50 study away students from NYU, NYU Abu Dhabi, and other universities arrived on campus just in time for Lunar New Year celebrations.

FEBRUARY
Campus came alive with festivities for the Year of the Snake as the community celebrated a combined Lantern Festival Fair/Dumpling Fest. Undergraduate applications reached a record high, podcasters from China and the US met on campus, and the Frontiers Science Center for Data Science organized its second annual Academic Committee Meeting.  

MARCH
Seniors counted down to Commencement, students kept fit and practiced their language skills, and a conference explored social impact. The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) launched a new exhibition and prospective students visited campus. Student athletes went up against University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Duke Kunshan University, competing in six sports in the last leg of the inaugural Sino-Foreign University Cup. Researchers published new findings in nickelate superconductors.

APRIL
The Shanghai-NY Master of Social Work Program celebrated its 10th anniversary, and campus was abuzz with activities, from TEDxNYUShanghai and Earth Month events to a bike ride along the Huangpu River and a discussion of dialects and identity. Professor Joanna Waley-Cohen commemorated the close of her term as provost with an exhibit on her experiences in China. Professor Fanghua Lin was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, mathematicians gathered for a probability conference, and a new study looked into “buy now” discounts.

MAY
Admitted international students visited campus—and scholars too. We honored three faculty members for excellence in teaching, enjoyed the end-of-year shows, and celebrated our seniors’ achievements (including a record number of Yenching Scholars). World-renowned pianist Kong Xiangdong wowed us at Commencement, and graduate students threw their caps in the air at Convocation. NYU Shanghai exhibited at the Shanghai Education Expo, winning the Popularity Award. Scholars held an international conference on partial differential equations and researchers looked into fireflies’ synchronization patterns and the impact of ranking list length.  

JUNE
As summer began, young scholars convened for conferences on marketing science and computational science. MBA students from NYU Abu Dhabi arrived on campus for a course on doing business in Shanghai. Staff and faculty badminton enthusiasts competed in the first Violet Feather Cup. Faculty publications were accepted for the prestigious STOC Conference.

JULY
Professor Bei Wu was announced as NYU Shanghai’s new provost. Students volunteered at a summer camp for migrant youth, newly enrolled doctoral students prepared to kick off their PhD journeys, students from around the world immersed themselves in Mandarin, and high schoolers attended the first-ever AI Summer Program. Scientists looked into how water rings “bounce."

AUGUST
Campus came alive again as the largest-ever class of first-year students arrived and settled in. Scholars from around the world explored climate and nature finance, and professionals delved into lifelong learning with an open course. New studies looked into a clever brain shortcut, three-particle quantum discord, and quantum “magic."

SEPTEMBER
There were so many newcomers to welcome onto campus! More than 600 first-year students went through Orientation Week, a large cohort of study away students found their bearings, and a crew of masters and PhD students began their journeys. NYU President Linda Mills dropped by the Reality Show, and the auditorium was renamed after a generous supporter. The community discussed literature, a new exhibition opened at ICA, and everyone got hungry for mooncakes.

OCTOBER
We celebrated NYU Shanghai’s 13th birthday with violet cake, and Chancellor Tong Shijun led a community cycling tour of Yuandang Lake. We witnessed the launch of an AI tool built by students and faculty and a new speaker series for women in computing. Scholars discussed strategies for engaging Asian-American caregivers for dementia patients, explored large-scale circulation, and revealed hidden patterns behind everyday biases.

NOVEMBER
We cheered on the Qilins as they competed in the first leg of the second Sino-Foreign University Cup, and the community went on an eco-walking challenge. Pianist Kong Xiangdong returned to campus for a discussion of music and life, student designers wowed us at the Trash Fashion Show, and undergraduates presented their research. We put down our phones, staff and students connected through language learning and art, and the first-ever Culture and Heritage Expo celebrated our diverse community. Scholars debated real estate investment, LOUD held its third advisory committee meeting, and scientists explored how a localized force alters great flows.

DECEMBER
Nobel laureate Robert Engle discussed financial implications of geopolitical risks. Scholars attended a workshop on sovereign debt and development finance. Students put their talents on display in the End of Semester shows. A new alumni lounge opened, Professor Alejandro Ramirez received a Humboldt Prize, and researchers delved into the inclusion illusion.
