SECU Day of Kindness
Residence Refresh
One of the homes operated by The Arc Montgomery County recently got a refresh thanks to the generous support of SECU! The women who live there were thrilled to welcome SECU employees for their Annual Day of Kindness initiative. Sponges scrubbed the kitchen deep clean. Paintbrushes fluttered against the walls and trim, covering them in a fresh coat of bright white paint. And new wall art and curtains were hung under the artful gaze and direction of the people who live there. The home looks brand new and we are all feeling grateful.

Toddler Boogie's Triumphant Return

For the first time since the pandemic, our inclusive childcare center was crowded for the returning annual tradition of Toddler Boogie. Children from the center and neighborhood came dressed in costume and were delighted by the many rooms of activities at the KFICCC fundraiser that brought in around $3,000. Over 100 children enjoyed themselves, getting their faces painted, making seasonal crafts, playing pumpkin-themed games, listening to stories, and dancing to some Halloween beats.

Accessibility Court Case

The Supreme Court is weighing a case on whether a disability rights campaigner can sue hotels for failing to disclose accessibility information if she doesn't plan to actually book a room. The case could limit the ability of "testers" to bring lawsuits to benefit the disability community by ensuring hotels comply with the ADA. While the case is no longer in dispute, the Supreme Court is still considering weighing in, a decision that could impact future “tester” cases including those for housing discrimination.

Maryland College Education Planning

Help inform future college educational programming in Maryland. Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often face limited opportunities to pursue higher education after graduating from high school. The Center for Transition and Career Innovation at the University of Maryland College Park is conducting a survey to gauge the interest of students, families, and educators in college programs tailored for students with IDD in Maryland. The collected information will be instrumental in presenting proposals to state legislators, seeking grants, and establishing collaborative partnerships.

Wheelchair-friendly Flights

United Airlines is making a change to their booking tools to increase friendliness to people who use wheelchairs. The announcement comes after the investigation of a complaint by a disability rights advocate. Starting early next year, when booking online, people will be able to filter flights that will accommodate their wheelchairs and can have the difference refunded if they need to take a more expensive flight.
