Make plans to join Council Member Watkins at the District 1 Drop-In on Monday, Nov. 3, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Meadow Drive Baptist Church, 1000 Meadow Dr. NW. It's an excellent opportunity for casual conversations with Council Member Watkins to discuss issues in District 1 or throughout the city.

D1 Has High Engagement Town Hall
Council Member Watkins hosted a town hall at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center that featured Landscape Management Director Brian Walker, Public Works Director Chris McNeese and Huntsville Police Capt. Scott Widner. The large audience heard presentations from the three speakers and followed up with an array of questions.

Quarterly at Cavalry Jazzgiving 
Council Member Watkins invites you to a special event in November that kicks off a series of community interactions. In collaboration with Arts Huntsville, the first Quarterly at Cavalry Jazzgiving will be on Friday, Nov. 21, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cavalry Hill Community Center, 2900 Fairbanks St. NW. Enjoy the soothing sounds from saxophonists Alex Banks and Tommy "Sax Legend" Friend at this neighborhood celebration. Similar events will follow on a quarterly basis with the next event set for February 2026.

Speaking to Civic Engagement Academy
Council Member Watkins enjoyed her visit to the City’s Civic Engagement Academy (CEA), sharing with the 2025 fall cohort about growth in Huntsville. CEA is a City initiative, enacted by the Huntsville Office of Multicultural Affairs, that provides residents of Huntsville with the opportunity to learn more about and get involved in their local government through a series of dynamic, interactive and engaging sessions. The program is free and applications will open soon for the 2026 spring cohort.

Make a Difference at Cavalry Hill Tree Planting
The City’s Green Team will host a public tree planting on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cavalry Hill Community Center, 2900 Fairbanks St. NW. Hundreds of trees will be planted and supplies will be provided. All ages and experience levels are welcome.

Historic D1 Neighborhoods
Two neighborhoods in District 1 will be nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. Magnolia Terrace and Brothers Heights/Gurley Additions will be nominated through a $35,000 grant from the Alabama Historical Commission that covers 60 percent of the cost while the City will cover the remaining 40%. The bordering neighborhoods are located north of Holmes Avenue and west of Pulaski Pike.

Goodway Lodge Tours City Hall
Leading City Hall tours are always a highlight for Council Members and members of Goodway Lodge No. 222 recently visited the center of Huntsville’s municipal government with Council Member Watkins as their host. The tour spotlighted the public art displayed in City Hall and Council Member Watkins presented the group with a resolution recognizing their years of service in Huntsville.

Council Recommends Northern Bypass Name
The City Council approved a resolution at the Oct. 9 meeting to recommend adopting Bob Wade Lane as the name for the new extension of the Northern Bypass. The affected roadway, under construction with an expected completion in spring 2027, runs from Pulaski Pike to North Memorial Parkway. The resolution will be submitted to the Alabama Legislature for consideration. (Photo by Marty Sellers | GTEC)

Road Resurfacing in District 1
The City Council recently approved funding for Phase 4 of the City’s road improvement plan for the 2025 fiscal year. The improvements include resurfacing and concrete work for neighborhood roads. Several streets in D1 are part of the projects. Some of those include:
  • Armstrong Street from Love Drive to Turf Avenue
  • Magnolia Drive from Pulaski Pike to Fitcheard Avenue
  • Shady Lane Drive from Grizzard Road to Sparkman Drive

Honoring Second Chance Deliverance
Council Member Watkins presented Second Chance Deliverance and Restoration Ministries with a resolution celebrating their 20th anniversary of service to the Huntsville community at the Oct. 23 Council meeting. Founded in 2005 by Minister Leo Robinson, Second Chance Deliverance and Restoration Ministries provides assistance to individuals struggling with addiction through Bible-based intervention and counseling.

Praising Chill Huntsville for Public Safety Advocacy
Chill Huntsville and Stop the Violence, founded by Rev. Cornell Martin, is a nonprofit organization that works to prevent violence and promotes peace through youth violence prevention in Huntsville and surrounding areas. Their efforts have contributed to safer schools, stronger families and unified communities. Council Member Watkins was honored to present the organization with a resolution at the Oct. 9 Council meeting.
