Last spring, Keaton Funderburk '22 joined the ranks of scientists interested in REGγ, a proteasome activator that works to degrade unnecessary or damaged proteins in the body. Scientific attention has recently shifted to REGγ because of its role in cancer, aging, and neurodegenerative disease. However, due to REGγ's elusive nature, research on the proteasome activator has been wide-ranging and inconclusive. In an article titled " Regulation of Life and Death by REGγ" — published this past July in Cells, an international journal of cellular and molecular biology — Funderburk reviewed the research findings to form a more coherent narrative of what is currently understood about REGγ.
Professor of Practice in Biochemistry Henry James Li Xiaotao, who supervised Funderburk’s research, said there is still much to understand about REGγ’s functions and regulatory mechanisms. "You cannot just describe REGγ’s function in one or two sentences," he said. "For example, it has a function to promote cancer. But it also has functions involved in aging, immune response, neuron degeneration, and metabolism."

"Each kind of animal on Earth, no matter its size or speed, has evolved a remarkable and unique set of survival skills. How each kind of animal lives, where it lives, how it interacts with its own animal group, and with other types of animals, its niche in the ecosystem — all of this should be deeply researched and each animal deserves its own book."

Performed and choreographed by five NYUSH alumni and NYU Shanghai Assistant Arts Professor of Dance Siye Tao, "Watch, and Being Watched" (2021) is a short dance film that has won the Best Interface of Dance & Public at the Dare to Dance in Public Film Festival, Best Experimental film at ARFF Barcelona Film Festival, Best Experimental Short at Rome International Movie Awards. It was also officially selected by the Screendance International Festival, Light Moves Festival of Screendance, and 15 other festivals in total (Cinematographer: Qing-wen Yan, and Sound designer: T.B B). "The interaction between the dancers and their casual 'audience' makes their roles — audience vs. performer — blurred and interchangeable. Who are the performers and who are the audience? This is the question this short film tries to ask," said Professor Tao.
