The Transdisciplinary Institute in Applied Data Sciences (TRIADS) has announced its newest crop of seed grant recipients, with eight teams of researchers receiving funding. Featuring faculty from four different WashU schools (Arts & Sciences, Brown School, McKelvey School of Engineering, and the School of Medicine), these projects leverage data science to address pressing societal issues.

Michael Frachetti has joined the Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures (ITF) as its new co-director. Frachetti, who joined the WashU faculty in 2005, is a professor of archaeology and principal investigator of the Spatial Analysis, Interpretation, and Exploration Lab. He will serve as ITF co-director alongside initiative co-founder William Acree.

Jhan Carlos Salazar has climbed great heights in his six years as a graduate student at WashU. Working with Jonathan Losos, the William H. Danforth Distinguished University Professor and director of the Living Earth Collaborative, Salazar studies mountains as incubators for evolution and bastions of biodiversity. His work centers on the Andes, a mountain range near his hometown of Puerto Tejada, Colombia.

Home to literary giants Mark Twain, T.S. Eliot, Marianne Moore, Maya Angelou, and John Keene, St. Louis is renowned for its literary roots. This history lives on today in St. Louis’s thriving literary arts scene. The Literary St. Louis exhibition at Olin Library traces WashU’s engagement in creative communities to celebrate the legacy of literary arts in St. Louis. Center for the Literary Arts postdoctoral fellow Ashley Colley organized this exhibition.

St. Louis is home to a vital community of indie presses and artists who operate locally but whose groundbreaking publications reach readers across the country and around the world. Join the Center for the Literary Arts for a panel discussion with five local publishers of poetry, fiction, art, and essay to talk about the work they do and the unconventional ways in which they do it.

Hosted every Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. in the TRIADS workspace (420 Jolley Hall), these informal gatherings each focus on a particular topic of data science research. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. No reservation is required, and participants are always welcome to bring a friend.

Join Living Earth Collaborative and WashU’s Center for the Environment at the Missouri Botanical Garden for Tropical Forest February, a celebration of the lush biodiversity housed right here in St. Louis. The event will kick off with a talk by Dr. Mónica Carlsen, who will introduce you to the vibrant world of the only tropical forest in St. Louis — the Climatron. Then immerse yourself in the Climatron’s rich array of tropical plants and habitats through self-guided tours.

• Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce Bhavna Hirani has been promoted to Director of Research Development, Amanda Willenborg has been hired as Director of Research Administration (GAIN), and Julie Rivinus has been promoted to Associate Director of Research Project Management and Events. These new positions demonstrate the Dean’s commitment to supporting faculty research and continuing to build momentum for the strategic plan.
