Save the Date: Alumni Day 2023

We look forward to inviting alumni, family and friends back to Mystic Seaport on September 23, 2023 for a redesigned, informal Alumni Day! It will be a day of reconnecting with each other and the Museum, with opportunities to help on volunteer work projects at Williams-Mystic, a BYO lunch on the green, and an afternoon dogwatch to end the day. If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please email Amanda Severin on the Alumni Council Alumni Day Watch committee.

S23 Hosts Sustainable Potluck Dinner

Another April means another Earth Day at Williams-Mystic, and our students celebrated the best way they know how – with food!
On Friday, April 21, S23 organized a sustainable potluck dinner, with each house creating dishes based around a locally-sourced ingredient…kale! Kale was chosen because it is very nutrient dense and has a small environmental footprint. The inventive culinary creations were enjoyed by members of the Williams-Mystic community, including students, staff, faculty, and their family members.
The event was put together by Ari Quasney, this semester’s Student Sustainability Coordinator, as a way to promote sustainability efforts on campus. Thank you to Ari for planning such a successful event, and thank you to S23 for letting us indulge in some delicious food!

WM Alumni and Friends Recognized for Work Worldwide

This month, some of our alums and program friends were featured in articles published nationwide, highlighting their work across different fields.
On April 6, Rolling Stone published “Louisiana’s Coastline Is Crumbling. These Tribes Know How to Save it”, a feature that is part of Pulitzer Center’s “Connected Coastlines” series. The article features Elder Chief Shirell Parfait-Dardar of the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw tribe, her work as President of the First People’s Conservation Council, and her long history fighting for climate justice on behalf of her community. The article also features Chief Devon Parfait F18, who talks about the ways in which his time studying coastal land loss at Williams College has empowered him to advocate for his community through his new role with the Environmental Defense Fund. Dr. Fred Hocker F82, Director of Research at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, was featured in articles nationwide for uncovering a stunning discovery about this famous Swedish warship. While many details about Vasa’s crew are lost to time, osteological analysis of the remains revealed that one person aboard the ship, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and killed 30 people, was a woman. This story was published worldwide, with articles in The New York Times, the Associated Press, and ScienceDaily, all linked below.

Jim Carlton Feauted in Seaport TikTok Videos

We interrupt your daily TikTok viewing of cute animals and viral dance challenges to introduce the next great internet sensation: Dr. Jim Carlton!
Jim was recently featured as part of Mystic Seaport Museum’s Earth Week video series alongside Krystal Rose, MSM’s Curator of Collections. In the first video, Jim and Krystal discuss the colonization of marine organisms on plastics in the ocean, as well as the ways we can reduce plastic use in our daily lives. The second video features a piece of a Japanese dock that transported over 300 species to the American Pacific Coast after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Share Your Recipe for the Global Galley!

We are once again accepting recipe submissions for the Global Galley, to be featured in next month’s eGam. The Global Galley is a project started by members of the Williams-Mystic Alumni Council to celebrate the program’s deep connection with food and sharing recipes. Each month, one recipe will be selected and featured in the eGam.
We invite you to thoughtfully submit a recipe – photographed and legibly handwritten on a napkin (as is Williams-Mystic tradition) – that you have found yourself unable to live without and/or incapable of describing yourself apart from. Please also include any photographs of said dish, as well as any memories you have about the dish as it relates to Williams-Mystic.
