As 2025 drew to a close, the inevitable forecasts for 2026 began to emerge. Many were saying the market will continue to be strong. The economy is humming along. 2026 should continue the almost non-stop run-up in the market. Having said that, I am reminded of two (2) quotes pertinent to today’s market:
📖 “Be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy when others are fearful” – Warren Buffett
📖 “Pigs get fed; hogs get slaughtered” – Mark Cuban
I am not suggesting you liquidate your entire portfolio and put the cash in a coffee can buried in the yard. I am saying that maybe you need to look at your portfolio with an objective eye toward your own goals. Maybe 100% in a S&P 500 index fund is not the best course of action. Leaving some money on the table is better than leaving the table with no money!
Each day seems to be greeted by plant closures and industry consolidations. Having lived through a 32-year career in the chemical industry and a handful of consolidations, mergers, and flat-out takeovers, this oftentimes doesn’t end well. Unemployment remains higher than a well-humming economy would indicate. Those looking for a job are experiencing longer times to find employment.
When you think that the cost of financial advice or investment management is not worth it, perhaps you should consider the costs of mismanagement. A misstep on taxes or missed RMDs could easily exceed the cost of a professional.
