TRUE MAROONS
John Kizilarmut ‘96 was inducted into the DCHS Performing Arts Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 13 following the closing spring musical performance. Kizilarmut is a percussionist and instructor who has performed with a wide range of artists and groups. He is a frequent guest performer and clinician at percussion and jazz festivals throughout the midwest as well as an active composer and arranger whose works have been featured by many award winning music programs. He currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri, with his wife Nicole and son Evan.
Bernard "B.J." Smith '71, author of crime fiction, essays, poetry and technical prose will be holding a signing at Beaverdale Books in Des Moines on Saturday, June 8. The bookstore carries two crime novels written by Smith, both of which are based in Des Moines. Smith is a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of the University of Iowa where he studied journalism. He has covered education, police and courthouse beats for newspapers in Iowa City, Ottumwa, and Clinton, Iowa, and worked for a newspaper syndicate. Smith currently resides in Longmont, Colorado, with his wife Susan. His novels can also be found on Amazon. 

Dana Van Sambeek '04 has earned a Ph.D in Animal Science from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center in Natick, Massachusetts. She also holds a master's degree in Animal Science and bachelor's degrees in Animal Science and Microbiology from Iowa State University. 

Read about Laura Downey ‘07, now Sister Mary Esther, and her brother, Deacon James Downey '11, who were recently featured in the Catholic Mirror. Sister Mary Esther will make her final vows in July 2020 and Deacon Downey will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Des Moines in June 2019.
