Each month, Duke in DC prepares a special edition of the Duke Digest to spotlight Duke's expertise and involvement in a particular area. With athletes in the middle of the Paris Olympics programming, we wanted to give a special shout-out to Duke's own Olympians.

Blue Devil Prospects for Olympic Gold at Paris Games

20 Duke athletes, alumni and coaches are set to partake in this year's Summer Olympics in Paris, representing 12 nations and teams in seven different sports. Seven Blue Devils will represent Duke in basketball, including head women’s coach Kara Lawson and incoming men's team first-year Khaman Maluach of South Sudan. Three Duke women's golfers will compete representing three different countries, and five Duke track and field athletes will compete representing five different countries. Other sports featuring Duke competitors include soccer, field hockey, fencing and wrestling.

Duke Blue Devils in the Paris Olympics Recap

Duke's Olympians have had a mixed showing thus far at the Olympics--out of 22 competitions as of this writing, there have been 11 wins, 10 losses and one tie. Currently the winningest Blue Devils play basketball, both men's and women's, and soccer's Quinn playing for Canada. On the docket for today: Women's Field Hockey and Women's Basketball Groups B and C.

Payne on Olympic Dream, Representing Nigeria

Duke soccer alumna Toni Payne is representing Nigeria at the Paris Olympics this year. Payne graduated from Duke in 2017. She was officially named to the team earlier this month, and has helped lead Nigeria to its first women's soccer Olympics appearance since Beijing in 2008. This summer marks Payne's Olympic debut. Nigeria was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Japan yesterday.

Long Road to Olympic Shot

Duke field hockey alum Leah Crouse (T '22) is another of several Blue Devils competing or coaching in the Olympics this year. The defender from Virginia Beach, Virginia, transitioned to that position from her usual attack or midfield position just one month before the team began the qualifying process.

Lawson Set for Another Olympic Business Trip

Paris 2024 marks the third time Duke Women's Basketball Head Coach Kara Lawson is headed to the Olympics, once as a player and now twice in a coaching role. She is set to serve as an assistant coach of the U.S. women’s team. In the 2020 games, Lawson coached the U.S. women’s 3x3 basketball team to a gold medal. Lawson will be joined on the USA team by WNBA star Chelsea Gray, a 2014 Duke graduate.

Centennial Spotlight: Coach K

In addition to Krzyzewski's legacy on the home court with Duke Men's Basketball, he also has an impressive history at the national level! He has earned 12 National Coach of the Year honors at Duke and won six gold medals as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. His first Olympic experience was as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 1984 Olympics in L.A., and he won gold at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Duke Athletics can boast yet another Olympian coach: Gail Goestenkors. She was the head coach for Duke women's basketball from 1992-2007. As an assistant coach, she earned gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympics. During her tenure at Duke, she led the team to four Final Fours, two national champ appearances and five ACC championships. Her record includes winning 396 games and losing just 99.
