- Multidisciplinary Research Program of the University Research Initiative

This opportunity includes the Office of Naval Research, Army Research Office, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The MURI program supports basic research in science and engineering at U.S. universities that is of potential interest to DoD. The program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts where more than one traditional discipline interacts to provide rapid advances in scientific areas of interest to the DoD. NSF- The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines (see the Fields of Study list at the end of this notice) who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Undergraduate seniors and bachelor’s degree holders may apply before enrolling in a degree-granting graduate program. Please encourage sophomores and juniors to attend the workshop. Those already enrolled in graduate school may apply one time only and must be in their first year or just beginning their second year of graduate school. Benefits: The NSF awards $46,000 each year to the GRFP institution to cover the Fellow stipend and cost-of-education allowance for each NSF Graduate Research Fellow “on tenure” at the institution. The NSF GRFP fellowship stipend is $34,000 for a 12-month tenure period, prorated in monthly increments of $2,833. The institutional cost-of-education allowance is $12,000 per tenure year per Fellow. Missouri S&T will sponsor a workshop on writing the application for the NSF GRFP on August 11, 2020 via zoom that is open to all four campuses. RSVP by August 6, 2020.
- Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems (DISES)
Deadline: 11/16/2020
The DISES Program supports research projects that advance basic scientific understanding of integrated socio-environmental systems and the complex interactions (dynamics, processes, and feedbacks) within and among the environmental (biological, physical and chemical) and human ("socio") (economic, social, political, or behavioral) components of such a system. The program seeks proposals that emphasize the truly integrated nature of a socio-environmental system versus two discrete systems (a natural one and a human one) that are coupled. DISES projects must explore a connected and integrated socio-environmental system that includes explicit analysis of the processes and dynamics between the environmental and human components of the system. PIs are encouraged to develop proposals that push conceptual boundaries and build new theoretical framing of the understanding of socio-environmental systems. Additionally, we encourage the exploration of multi-scalar dynamics, processes and feedbacks between and within the socio-environmental system.
W.M. KECK FOUNDATION- Research Program
Deadline: Pre-application counseling period through 08/15/2020, Phase 1 application-11/01/2020
The foundation welcomes applications for its Research Program, which supports pioneering discoveries in 1) medical research and 2) science and engineering. The program awards grants to research universities, medical colleges, and major private independent scientific and medical research institutions for projects that are focused on important and emerging areas of research; have the potential to develop a breakthrough technology, instrumentation, or methodology; are innovative, distinctive, and interdisciplinary; demonstrate a high level of risk due to an unconventional approach or by challenging a prevailing paradigm; and have the potential for transformative impact (e.g., the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible, or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem). The program seeks to fund high-risk/high-impact work that lays the groundwork for new paradigms, technologies, and discoveries, save lives, and adds to our collective understanding of the world.

New IRB Submission System Now Online
The UMSL Institutional Review Board (IRB) now uses eCompliance as our online submission system for IRB applications. All new IRB applications should be submitted via eCompliance. All previously approved active studies will need to transition from IRBNet to eCompliance by October 16, 2020. For information on the new submission system and user guides, visit the IRB website. Technology Transfer at UMSL
The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at UMSL, which is part of the ORA, is here to assist faculty in bringing their research discoveries and inventions, including copyrightable works such as software, to market.

UMSL's TTO staff work to analyze the technology regarding intellectual property protection and the market need to determine whether patent applications should be filed and/or copyrights should be registered. For those inventions that can be protected (and even some that cannot), we then look for potential industry partners, which could include established companies and/or startup ventures, to license and commercialize the discovery.
We also process all Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), and research-related fee-for-service agreements, among others, for UMSL.
