Breaking Barriers
Peggy Perno, director of the Office of Student Accessibility and Accommodation, helps students with disabilities succeed at Puget Sound. She determines if they qualify for accommodations that remove barriers to academics and campus life. Her office also provides weekly check-in meetings, structured study time, and peer mentors. “I enjoy interacting with students,” Peggy says. “My job lets me use my creativity, experience, and knowledge every day to help students.”

HACKS & CHOPS Nick Brody, associate professor of communication studies, researches the social implications of technology. He recently contributed to an article for The Startup about how app-based dating is rewiring our interpersonal skills.

Night at the Museum
Slime molds, skeletons, and scavengers… Oh, my! Slater Museum of Natural History shows off its most ghastly and ghoulish specimens at the Death and Decay Night at the Museum event on Oct. 30. The Night at the Museum series hosts free, family-friendly, drop-by events that each explore a subset of the Slater collection, often with special guest live animals from Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

The world record holder for the tallest tomato plant was grown by Norticulture Ltd. in Lancashire, United Kingdom, and reached a height of 65 feet. But not all plants have such lofty aspirations. Maya Sealander ’20 studied the genes in tomato plants to find out what makes some lazier than others.

FUR THERAPY Students got a bit of relief from midterms by spending some quality time with a handful of very special four-legged furry guests during a recent Greek Life Pause for Paws event. Service dogs hung out in Rasmussen Rotunda, helping students de-stress from studying—and collectively melting our hearts.
