Sales For Week 2 of August Increased by 0.17%
Minor improvements from last week but independent grocers went from negative to positive this week. Retailers reported same-store sales were up 0.17 percent during week 2 of August. However, shopping trips have declined from month to month, this week we saw a drop-in consumer count by 0.81 percent.
Why haven’t we seen an increase in foot traffic? Shoppers now have tons of new formats and food solution options, from online same-day delivery, curbside pick-up and restaurant delivery to subscriptions and direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings from CPGs. As the number of options keeps increasing, traditional grocery operators need to think of ways to inspire shoppers, given that how they want to shop is becoming as important as what they buy.
