Important Change to Zoom Meetings

There has been an important change to campus Zoom accounts.  All participants in meetings set up through campus Zoom accounts will have to be authenticated.  This means users will be required to be logged into a Zoom account before being granted access to the meeting.  External users (guest speakers, panelists, etc.) without a KSU account can create a free account with Zoom and be able to enter the meeting as an authenticated user (user with a Zoom account). Breakout Rooms Now Available in Microsoft Teams

Breakout rooms are now enabled within Microsoft Teams.  The meeting organizer will now be able to place participants into breakout rooms. Explore the Breakout Rooms guide here.  
In order to use breakout rooms in a meeting in which you are the organizer, be sure to have the "New Meeting Experience" enabled.  
To turn on the New Meeting Experience for Microsoft Teams:
  • Launch Microsoft Teams.
    In the upper right of Teams, click or tap your avatar or initials icon.
  • A drop-down menu appears. Select Settings.
  • The Settings window appears with the General section selected.
  • Click or tap "Turn on new meeting experience (New meetings and calls will open in separate windows. This step requires restarting Teams.
  • In the upper right, click or tap the "x" icon to close the Settings window.
  • Quit Microsoft Teams.
  • Relaunch Microsoft Teams. 
    For your next Teams meeting, the meeting will open in a separate window and the controls will appear in the top right.

Big Sur Now Available for Campus Macs

UITS is now supporting macOS 11 Big Sur. While most University-supported applications have received updates that should allow them to continue to function, there are a few outliers that have yet to be updated by their developers. The following application is known to not be ready to support macOS 11 Big Sur on the release:
     -Avid Pro Tools 
Please note that this list only encompasses applications deployed and supported by UITS. Any applications not deployed by UITS have not been verified or tested for functionality and, as such, may cease operating after updating your device to macOS 11 Big Sur. If you have concerns or questions about the compatibility of any application you or your department has installed, please reach out to the developer/distributor of said applications. 

To upgrade to Big Sur:
  • Save and close any open documents.
  • Click This Link 
  • Click "Get"  button.
  • The software update will open and prompt you to download.
  • Click "Download". 
  • Once downloaded follow prompts to install.
  • The computer will reboot several times during the install. It should take 30-60 minutes to complete. 

New Scan to Email Feature Coming to Campus Ricoh Printers

There is a new "Scan to Email" feature coming to campus Ricoh printers.  This feature will allow users to scan a document and instead of going directly to a network drive, it will be sent by email allowing users more flexibility in where and on what device they can review their scanned document.  The "Scan to Drive" feature is not yet being decommissioned, (this feature will likely be decommissioned at the end of the Spring 2021 semester) but users are encouraged to take advantage of the "Scan to Email" tool as it offers an easy way to access scanned files for up to 30 days within an email message. New Features are Available in D2L

UITS is excited to announce that new features within D2L are now available. These two features within the Assignments tool and the Discussions tool.

Within the Assignments tool:
The create and edit Assignments page has been updated. The classic tabbed look has been refreshed to a fully immersive page layout.
The new experience streamlines the process of linking assignments to an instructor's gradebook automatically. When an instructor enters a score, the assignment is added to Grades, and the name and score are automatically synced for you.

Within the Discussions tool:
A visual word count is now visible in the HTML Editor for discussion posts. The word count is dynamically displayed to students while they type in the HTML Editor. For instructors, the word count appears on the Assessment page during the discussions assessment process, and it also appears inline with the post details in the Discussions Reading View and Grid View. Instructors can view the word count for all user posts.

New Security Update to KSU-Issued Windows Devices

Windows workstations and laptops will soon have an additional security layer enabled. These changes will include:

1. All remote access (Remote Desktop Protocol and/or and Secure Shell) will require the use of the KSU VPN both on and off-campus.

2. Users will receive a prompt when an application is attempting to make changes to the computer, asking the user to enter their password to authorize the new or changing program to run.

Multi-Factor Authentication Coming to Virtual Desktops

Multi-factor authentication (DUO) will be coming to those who use Virtual Desktops (VDI).  Both on- and off-campus users will need to log in using multi-factor authentication in the VDI system every time they connect.

New UITS Computer Lab in Sturgis Library

UITS is excited to announce that the UITS Computer Lab moved to the first floor of Sturgis Library, near the video wall.  This convenient new location will open on January 11, 2021.  Whether you need help with passwords, Duo, need assistance setting up your Wi-Fi, or other support, you’ll find the UITS Student Tech Help Desk ready to support you. 

While this change of location means silent and group lab areas are no longer available, the library offers ample space to work independently as well as collaboratively.
