Immigration Tip
Completing Your Degree in Winter or Summer
Generally, it is not permitted to be present in the U.S. and take only online coursework (which includes 50% online or higher hybrid courses) in your final semester of study. However, questions often arise as to whether a student can be present in the U.S. and take only online coursework in the final term of study if it is a typical break period like winter or summer. Guidance from the U.S. government suggests that students should always enroll in at least one in-person course during their final term. Accordingly, ISSS recommends that you enroll in at least one in-person course if you will complete degree requirements during a typical break period. Be aware that failure to take at least one in-person course during a final term could possibly jeopardize your eligibility for future immigration benefits or statuses (such as H-1B). We recommend that you speak with ISSS regarding enrollment if you will complete your program in winter or summer term.
