Ultimately, the measures of our success are improvements in students’ persistence, achievement, and graduation rates—particularly students who are the first in their families to go to college and those from groups historically under‐served in higher education.

Am I ever thankful for leap day. I am thankful for the delightful absurdity of an extra day every four years. I am also thankful that I had one more day to get our February newsletter out!
Just a few days ago, the National Learning Community Collaborative had an opinion piece in Inside HigherEd that makes a case for using learning communities to glue higher education back together in the wake of profound societal shifts of the last decade, notably the isolating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the Japanese art of Kintsugi broken pottery is repaired with precious metals, rendering the object not just restored, but transformed into something uniquely beautiful. Similarly, those of us working to build nurturing relationship-rich learning communities are engaged in an act of repair, crafting a more exquisite educational landscape.

Embodiment Online: Bringing Our Bodies to Zoom |
It can be hard to connect with each other on Zoom. It can be hard to connect with ourselves, on Zoom. To feel that we are really all there. Let’s experiment together with inviting our bodies into the frame. We’ll try out a variety of brief movement and awareness building activities, aligning each with underlying theory and discussing how and when to use them with students. The focus is on quick interventions that can fit in and around other online class activities, to enhance social presence and restore attention. We’ll play together, stretching the limits of those little squares we spend so much time in.
