Do Not Work Off-campus Without Authorization
F-1 and J-1 students are not permitted to work off campus unless you have authorization to do so. Some examples of unauthorized employment would be:
  • Working at an off-campus restaurant or store
  • Operating a food service out of your apartment
  • Operating a taxi service for other student

Receiving money or compensation for services that you provide is employment, and it is unauthorized unless your paycheck comes from Miami University or you have received
work authorization through ISSS. The only way you can receive authorization for off-campus employment is by requesting and obtaining CPT or OPT work authorization.
Employment is taken very seriously by the US government. Working without authorization is one of the most serious violations of legal status. In addition to affecting your legal status now, it could also cause significant problems in the future if you are applying for a work visa or permanent residency in the United States. If you have questions about working off-campus, please contact the ISSS office for more information.
