Believe it or not, it's time to start thinking about fall registration! Fall 2023 course schedules will become available Monday, March 27th, and the registration period will open on Monday, April 24th. This means you have a month to plan your Fall courses and also get cleared for registration. Remember, you won't be able to register unless the advisor's hold is removed from your account. If you are interested in a career in social impact, or are looking to pursue work in advocacy communications and/or nonprofit, be sure to check out these the Advocacy Lab and Marketing for Nonprofit courses offered by NYU Wagner. See below for more information about each of these courses from a current MA student.

"Advocacy Lab is useful for those who could imagine working in national or local advocacy organizations that make change happen or anyone who wants to understand the art of issue advocacy as a theory and method of social change. The course provides an overview of and training in how to affect public policy through advocacy campaigns, legislative lobbying, issue branding, coalition building and community organizing in the United States with experts and practioners providing students with real life scenarios and case studies. There are two specific weeks focused on messaging, narrative and communication in my course this semester.
A strength of the course is that it pairs you up with advocacy organizations to undertake 50 hours of fieldwork throughout the semester. For example, I'm supporting the strategic communications team at Make the Road New York, a grassroot immigrant rights movement, for my fieldwork, and have written opeds and policy statements for their campaigns."

"Marketing for Nonprofits is a practical, in-depth course into successful marketing for cultural and nonprofit organizations. It includes thorough coverage of the tools of marketing, their applications, and results. The course aims to provide an understanding of and practical uses for positioning an organization within its marketplace and developing a marketing plan and creative strategy. It includes many guest speakers throughout the semester including from local New York charities like Summerstage and Welcome to Chinatown, and national charities including the ACLU."

Professional Development Opportunites

Research Internship Opportunity: The Empower Lab at NYU

The NYU Empower Lab is seeking students to work in their lab for the summer.

Visit the Empower Lab website for information about previous projects. Examples of current research topics include (but are not limited to):
● Retrospective analysis of clinic for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual violence
● Qualitative exploration of sugar dating practices in NYU undergraduate students
● Scoping review of screening for male perpetration of intimate partner violence
● Systematic literature review examining of trauma-informed-care practices

1. CV or Resume (PDF Format Preferred)
2. Cover letter describing your interests and relevant experience (PDF Format Preferred)
3. Any academic writing sample (no more than 4 pages, can be partial)
● Be sure to include any additional skills such as statistical programming
● Students with a mastery of social media and/or audiovisual proficiency encouraged but not required
● BIPOC students are especially encouraged to apply

This position is unpaid. However, RAs have obtained outside funding for their work. We encourage you to reach out if finances may be a barrier to applying. Please note that students must be available from 1:00-3:00PM on Thursdays for lab meetings, and must be able to devote 8 hours per week to the Empower Lab for one year. Beyond Spellcheck: An Editing Workshop for Graduate-Level Academic Writing

April 7 & April 14 | 4:00-5:30PM | Virtual

Are you unsure about how best to self-edit or edit the work of others? Join Julide Zeytunlu from the Steinhardt Writing Center for a 2-session workshop on editing and revising academic writing. The hands-on workshop will focus on the fundamentals of editing such as concision, clarity, and structure, and will help you become better equipped to tackle one of the most essential aspects of academic writing.
This interactive workshop will also introduce how the Steinhardt Writing Center can provide assistance in your academic journey. All Steinhardt graduate students are welcome but registration is required. The workshop will consist of two sessions on two consecutive Fridays. Register for this workshop here.

STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) Workshop

Join the Office of Global Services, for a conversation about off-campus employment that relates to your STEM degree at NYU Steinhardt after graduation. The workshop will cover eligibility, application process, and other details about STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT). You may be able to work in the United States after graduation for up to three years if you complete your studies in one of NYU Steinhardt's programs in STEM.
